Rooting Help

These are basic terms people use in rooting or modding their device.

Rooting- gaining s-off and superuser on an android device.
s-off- unlocking the device. (being able to mod)
s-on- locking the device. (not being able to mod)
superuser- an app that manages permisions on your device.
BusyBox- most rooted phones require this to do any mods.
.apk- a application file that can be installed to the phone.
ROM- a driver that your device runs on. (this is why most people root their devices) Roms usually add special functions and different stuff to your phone. They are usually based off of HTC Sense and AOSP. Cyanogen mod would be a commonly used AOSP Rom.
Kernel- this is what controls your devices CPU and Governer. Kernels will add different Governers and let you OverClock your CPU to run faster and smoother.
Bootloop- This is when you device starts up and then shuts down and starts up into a continuos loop. Performing a nandroid restore will get you running again.
NanDroid Backup- This is when you back up your current ROM and Kernels and apps. I ALWAYS SUGGEST PERFORMING A BACKUP WHENEVER YOU DO A MOD TO YOUR PHONE!!!
NanDroid Restore- Restores a backup that you performed.
Recovery- this is where you can flash new roms, perform nandroid backups and recoveries, mount and unmount your sd card, and most of everything.
Flashing- would be to install a .zip file. any mod is usually done throught flashing. AGAIN I WOULD SUGGEST RUNNING A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING!
md5 sum- this is a code that is phone specific. You can check different md5 sums to make sure its compatible with your phone. Not checking the md5 sum before flashing is how most people brick their device.
bricked device- a device that is now unfunctionable. about as worthless as a paper weight..

I know i am forgetting some but these are the most common terms. I will update as needed. If you want to add something just post in this thread! 😁
