Evangelion's Rei Ayanami Appears in Guide Dog Poster
Hidenori Matsubara's poster honors Int'l Guide Dog Day & 25,000 dogs in service
Neon Genesis Evangelion female lead Rei Ayanami appears in the Spring 2012 promotional poster for the National Federation of All Japan Guide Dog Training Institution's International Guide Dog Day, which is April 25. Hidenori Matsubara (Evangelion key animator and animation director, Ah! My Goddess/Sakura Wars character designer) drew Ayanami in her school uniform with Licht, a White Swiss Shepherd Dog who represents the 25,000 guide dogs in service throughout the world. ("Licht" is German for "light.")
This is the second time an Evangelion character has appeared in guide dog posters. Posters featuring pilot Mari Illustrious Makinami were created in the Fall 2010 campaign.
Madoka Magica's Kyoko and Homura were featured in two separate posters for Fall and Winter 2011.
This is the 11th year that posters were created for the non-profit organization since Culture Day on November 3, 2001. Previous posters have been distributed to 3,500 schools and have featured art from Akio Watanabe (Poyoyon Rock), Junichi Seki, Future Boy Conan, Onegai My Melody, Before Green Gables, and Anne of Green Gables.

The first Blue Exorcist episode will be in the TV series category, while Masaki Okuda, Ryo Okawara, and Yutaro Ogawa's Art Path 2011 "Count Down" will be in the Advertising Films category. Several student films round out Japan's roster at the festival.
Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen I: Haō no Tamago opened in Japan on February 4. The film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan on May 23. It has also been licensed for release in 16 countries around the world, including a North American release by Viz.
The second film in the series, Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen II: Doldrey Kōryaku (Berserk Golden Age Arc II: The Battle for Doldrey), is slated to be released in theaters in Japan on June 23. That film is scheduled to run for about 100 minutes and will focus on the epic battle by the Kingdom of Midland to retake Doldrey Castle from the Chuder Empire. Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen III: Kōrin (Berserk Golden Age Arc III: Descent) will open later in 2012 and run for about 110 minutes. In this film, the story "delves nonstop into the abyss of dark fantasy."

Thermae Romae Wins Prize at Italy's Far East Film Fest
Live-action film starring Hiroshi Abe wins audience award at April film festival
The 14th Far East Film Festival in Undine, Italy revealed on Monday that the live-action film adaptation of Mari Yamazaki's Thermae Romae manga has won the My Movies Audience Award. The film had won an audience poll on the Mymovies.it cinema website. The festival was held between April 20-28.
The comedy manga and film adaptation center on Lucius — an architect of public bath houses (thermae) in ancient Rome — who time-travels to various modern-day baths in Japan. Through manga and essay passages, Yamazaki explores the two cultures in the world "that have loved baths the most: the Japanese and the Romans!"
Hiroshi Abe (Shin Kyūseishu Densetsu Hokuto no Ken: Kenshirō-den, Trick, Godzilla 2000 Millenium) stars in the film as Lucius. The film also stars Aya Ueto. The film opened in Japan on April 28.
Yamazaki's original manga won the Manga Taisho (Cartoon Grand Prize) award in 2010, followed by the Short Work Prize in the 14th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes. It has since sold over 5 million copies and inspired a short television anime. Although Yamazaki was born in Tokyo, she now lives in Chicago.
Yen Press revealed earlier this month that it will publish the Thermae Romae manga in North America.
