On behalf of my newest group, Propitious, I would like to present to you what should be a simple but very useful tutorial. People have not been using this, but instead are using an improper and well, crappy way of animating. I hope this helps you guys and enjoy.
What you need:
1. Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended Edition
This must be the Extended Edition otherwise the feature needed will not be available.
2. Basic Photoshop knowledge
How to "properly" animate pictures:
1. Open a new document in Photoshop. In this case, I will be making a simple signature using the dimensions 550x100. Dimensions do not matter for this.
2. Add some text, center it, and make it whatever color you want. Also, color the background whatever you want. I made my background the color of HF's. Center the text by CTRL-clicking both the background layer and the text layer, go to the move tool (press V), then align by pressing the following buttons:Spoiler (Click to View)
3. Now go to Window, then make sure the "Animation" window is up.Spoiler (Click to View)
4. Now that the animation window is up (it should be at the bottom), you need to press the button in the lower right of the animation window. This will bring up the "Timeline Animation" menu.Spoiler (Click to View)
5. Make a new layer (CTRL + SHIFT + N).
6. Select the Brush tool (press B) and make a straight line with the brush tool. I recommend putting hardness at 0% for a more realistic looking glare. Put this on the layer you just made. This is going to be the layer that is animated.
7. Once that is finished, it should look like this:Spoiler (Click to View)
8. Now make the glare layer a clipping mask of the text layer. Right click the layer you just made, and press "Create Clipping Mask." Make sure the glare layer is the one right above the text layer.
9. If you did this correctly, it should look like this:Spoiler (Click to View)
10. Now go back to your animation window and press the arrow to the left of your glare layer. This will drop down "Position," "Opacity," and "Style."
11. Set the length of what you want your .gif to be. In my case, I want it to be 4 seconds long, so I press the following button in the top right of the animation menu:Spoiler (Click to View)
Spoiler (Click to View)
12. Then go to Document Settings and change the duration of the image.Spoiler (Click to View)
- I will only be showing you how to change the position of the layer through animation in this tutorial. However, the possibilities are endless!
13. Now that the "Layer 1" menu is up, click the little clock next to "Position."Spoiler (Click to View)
14. This should have made a little yellow diamond appear.Spoiler (Click to View)
15. Basically what this did was set the current position of the glare layer (in my case Layer 1) as the beginning of the animation.
16. Now you need to move the scrubber bar to where on the timeline you want the animation to end. For example, if you want the glare to take 2 seconds to move across the text, then move the scrubber to the 2 second mark.Spoiler (Click to View)
17. Now use the move tool (press V) and hold down the right arrow on your keyboard to move the glare line across the text. When you do this, a small, grey diamond should appear on the timeline where you have your scrubber bar.Spoiler (Click to View)
18. Now press play in the lower left and watch how sexy it looks as the glare line moves smoothly across the text.Spoiler (Click to View)
There are tons of other things you can do with this. You can change the opacity for a fade effect, the style for a combination of effects, and tons of other stuff. It will be interesting to see what you guys come up with and maybe people will stop using those crappy frame animations. 🤣
Here is the final product:Spoiler (Click to View)
I hope you guys loved this tutorial and I hope it helps a lot of you. If you have any questions, please ask below. I will answer them as quickly as I can and to the fullest of my ability.
Have a nice day.
