Secure your PayPal Account :: PayPal Security Key

Hi Guys,

I don’t know how many of us know this, but PayPal provides an awesome extra layer of security for protecting our account online.

The feature is called PayPal Security Key.

Add an extra level of security when you log in with the PayPal Security Key. This protects your account with one of the highest levels of online security available. Now you can add even more protection with the PayPal Security Key options.

There are actually three Security Key tools that you can choose from. I will try to explain each one of them here.

1. The TOKEN Security Tool -

How it works –

You get a gadget that generates a unique six-digit security code about every 30 seconds. You enter that code when you log in to your PayPal account with your regular user name and password. Then the code expires and no one else can use it.

Cost –

There is a one-off, non-refundable fee of $5.00 USD. After that, there's no monthly fee or recurring charge and your extra layer of security is free. The said fee is waived for PayPal Business accounts.

2. The CREDIT CARD SIZED Security Key -

How it works –

You carry this small credit-card sized device with you. It creates a unique security code on the go. The Security Key card is larger than the token and generates a new code instantly whenever the button is pushed, while the token generates a new code within 30 seconds once the button is pushed.

Cost –

The credit-card size PayPal Security Key costs $29.95, and there's no monthly service fee or additional cost. Replacement keys are the same price.

3. The MOBILE PHONE Security Key -

How it works –

You can simply sign up to get security codes sent by text message to your mobile phone.

Cost –

There is no fee to use your mobile phone as your PayPal Security Key. Standard text messaging rates apply when you receive a security code by SMS. Check with your mobile provider for details.

PayPal Security Key - FAQ

Note - Currently, these features are only available for some limited countries. But, I personally made a call to the customer care department of PayPal and according to them these would be available worldwide very soon.

Damn this sounds really good, sort of like the Battle.net Authenticator.
I'm like a crushed light bulb, all out of shine.
I'm so scared of the future so I stay stuck, broken in to pieces and my spirit's all taped up.

My dad is a Realtor and used to have one of these for the MLS and then they updated to a new way to reconize typing patterns, searches and locations.
This sounds nice :P I'm actually quite interested in getting this :P
Oh yeah, I actually have one for my domain account. I wasn't aware that it was available for Paypal. Thanks :) I might use this.

I just enabled it, and It let me use the key I already had. Only thing is, I don't think they support it on my iPhone app. Although, I haven't updated it in a while. I'll give it a try later.
Thank you for informing the community. 🙂
I am glad you people found it useful :)

And I recommend if PayPal provides such an awesome security, we should definitely avail it!

In the UK the security key is a text sent to your mobile phone. Sadly, when I tried to set it up the text didn't come though.
This feature should cut down the number of accounts being hacked. Great news!
Only downside is, it is much harder to file a dispute as unauthorized access. :P
I got this Paypal key and my original one broke and the numbers didn't work but Paypal sent me out a new one free of charge.

Thats a good thing. People that have this thing should not have the option to file an unauthorized access dispute.
Sounds great..
Thanks for letting us know about this bro.
I am gonna check now if it is available to my country or not.
Its worth a sticky so that everyone can know about it.
Thank you very much for informing us. Will probably order this in the future.

I wonder how it works. If it has to be connect to the internet somehow :S not sure.
