WhiteHat hackers are group of computer enthusiastic who hack just to learn and to find the flaw of the system/program.
BlackHat hackers(also known as Crackers) uses the hacking knowledge to infect users to gain money, notoriety etc. They are reason you hear all the hacking myths on the media. Also there's GreyHat who are the middleman of WhiteHat and Blackhat kitty had a snack
In a sense, you must be a Blackhat to be a good Whitehat, or at least think like a Blackhat to be a good Whitehat.
Obviously, from previous post's, you've concluded that a Blackhat hacker is the hacker that everyone THINKS a hacker is (well, every technology illiterate thinks a hacker is). They are the one's that compromise things (Ex: SQL and XSS) and Whitehat hackers are the one's that keep these systems of sorts safe from the Blackhats. In a essence you need to know both to be good at one.
