The basics to beginner hacking

Introduction
I have been posting in the beginner hacking section for quite a while now and I've been trying to help people with their many problems that they seem to face. Well now I'm going to compile a guide on some of the most frequently asked questions and my basics to it also. I hope you all can enjoy this and find it very helpful because that's what I hope to do with this guide.

What is a hacker?
I think the majority of people look at all hackers as black hat ones, the ones that do harm and not the ones that do good, I guess they're just remembered better because of the wrong reasons.
"Hacker means someone who finds weaknesses in a computer or computer network, though the term can also refer to someone with an advanced understanding of computers and computer networks."source: wikipedia
I will break it down into three different types of hackers that people know commonly:
White Hat: The white hat hacker is probably better known as the "ethical hacker". These are certified and legal hackers who do it only for good. I will give you an example of a white hat hacker:
Steve Wozniak One of the co-founders of the hugely successful company known as "apple". After dropping out of college, Wozniak invented a computer that could be sold as a fully assembled PC board. The rest is, as they say, history. Wozniak was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in September 2000.

Grey Hat:A grey hat in the hacking community refers to a skilled hacker whose activities fall somewhere between white and black hat hackers. They do hacking for good but also for bad. Example: In April 2011, a group of experts discovered that the Apple iPhone and 3G iPads were "logging where the user visits". Apple released a statement saying that the iPad and iPhone were only logging the towers that the phone could access. There have been numerous articles on the matter and it has been viewed as a minor security issue. This instance would be classified as "grey hat" because although the experts could have used this for malicious intent, the issue was reported. found on wikipedia

Black Hat:
A "black hat" hacker is a hacker who "violates computer security for little reason beyond maliciousness or for personal gain"
Example: In 2002, an exceptionally odd message appeared on a US Army computer screen: “Your security system is crap,” it read. “I am Solo. I will continue to disrupt at the highest levels.” It was later identified as the work of Scottish systems administrator, Gary McKinnon.
Gary has been accused of executing the largest ever hack of United States government computer networks — including Army, Air Force, Navy and NASA systems. The court had recommended that McKinnon be apprehended to the United States to face charges of illegally accessing 97 computers, causing a total of $700,000 in damage. Even more interesting are McKinnon’s motives for the large scale hackings, which he claims were in search of information on UFOs. He believed the US government was hiding such information in its military computers.

Less known:
Elite hacker: Most skilled hackers
Script Kiddie:s a non-expert who breaks into computer systems by using pre-packaged automated tools written by others,
Neophyte: Also known as "noob", someone who is new and knows no information.
Blue hat: A blue hat hacker is someone outside computer security consulting firms who is used to bug test a system prior to its launch, looking for exploits so they can be closed
Hacktivist: A hacktivist is a hacker who utilizes technology to announce a social, ideological, religious, or political message
Nation state:Intelligence agencies and cyberwarfare operatives of nation states.

Why do people hack?
People hack for a number of reasons:
  • Financial gain
  • Revenge
  • Satisfaction
  • It may be there job(white hat)
  • To learn

Keyloggers and R.A.T's
I see a lot of people asking questions about these around here so first off I would like to link their sections: Keylogger Section
R.A.T Section

What are they?
Keylogger: is the action of tracking (or logging) the keys struck on a keyboard, typically in a covert manner so that the person using the keyboard is unaware that their actions are being monitored.
R.A.T: A remote access tool (a RAT) is a piece of software that allows a remote "operator" to control a system as if he has physical access to that system. While desktop sharing and remote administration have many legal uses, "RAT" software is usually associated with criminal or malicious activity

How are they used?
The both of them are used very similarly to each other, firstly the victim downloads the file and opens it and then that's where the R.A.T or Keylogger come into use. It's mostly used for revenge, money or to learn.
A lot of common questions are about setting them up but to be honest I'm not going to go through the set up here in this thread, maybe some other time I will. Another question that is very often asked is how do I spread my R.A.T? Well I recommend using youtube and making a niche on it that people would really want to download.

Can I get caught?
Of course if you're doing some illegal method you carry the risk of getting caught. You are doing this at your own risk and I don't recommend you do it at all but it's not up to me so if your going to do it, I'm not going to try stop you. Anyway there's obviously some things that will decrease your chances of getting caught.

VPN:
A virtual private network (VPN) is a technology for using the Internet or another intermediate network to connect computers to isolated remote computer networks that would otherwise be inaccessible
So basically what it does is hide your ip address with a different one and this obviously slows people tracking you down if they are looking for you but of course you can still be caught.

Don't be stupid:
Don't fall victim to a dox, don't just go around given away your address and your name, phone number..etc on the internet. I highly recommend you to not give your password to anyone at all, Don't give your name to anyone, don't give away address.. etc. People will try to get around you with this along with trying you to download files off of them, again I will say do not trust any download link especially ones that look suspicious.

What happens if I do get caught?
Well that all depends on the severity of the crime you've committed. It could lead to jail time which could be many years, people will not take this lightly at all so always expect what could happen to you. You could be the subject to people trying to revenge hack you for what you've done them or to the others. Also you could lose friends if they learn to what you are up to, it's always important to know that.

I got hacked now what?
Well if you've been infected by a file it's always a good idea to check it out over in the white hat helping section: White hat helping section link here
First of all, try get it removed and make sure that it's not liable to happen again. Do all the necessary things to prevent it from happening again, make sure you're using an antivirus and an antispyware along with a good firewall behind you. Be very careful with the files you've downloaded and don't just download everything you see.

I don't know if I'm infected but my laptop/computer is running slow:
Well you can run a checkup here on hackforums located here: HJT Section
Also this is a very good thread to check out: PC running slow? Thread.

DOS
In computing, a denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users.

I've seen a lot of members asking for skype resolvers to get peoples ip's and then they proceed to use a booter, which boots the person offline for a certain length of time. It's used more to annoy the user than to actually hack them but of course like anything it can be traces so be careful with it.

F.A.Q
Where can I test my R.A.T? You can test your r.a.t using a program called sanboxie: http://www.sandboxie.com/
What can I do with an I.p? You can try the dox the user to gain more information about them or you could boot them offline although I wouldn't recommend doing either of them without a reason.
How do I hack facebook pages? Well without contact to the user the only way you could even try to do this is by trying to bruteforce the page. If you have contact you could try keylog/rat the user of the page.
I want to make my own programs. You can learn to code different kinds of programs in the coding section

Techniques that may be used:
Vulnerability scanner:
A vulnerability scanner is a tool used to quickly check computers on a network for known weaknesses.
Password cracking:
Password cracking is the process of recovering passwords from data that has been stored in or transmitted by a computer system. A common approach is to repeatedly try guesses for the password.
Packet sniffer:
A packet sniffer is an application that captures data packets, which can be used to capture passwords and other data in transit over the network.
Trojan horses:
A Trojan horse is a program which seems to be doing one thing, but is actually doing another. A trojan horse can be used to set up a back door in a computer system such that the intruder can gain access later.
Viruses:
A virus is a self-replicating program that spreads by inserting copies of itself into other executable code or documents. While some are harmless or mere hoaxes most computer viruses are considered malicious.
Worms:
Like a virus, a worm is also a self-replicating program. A worm differs from a virus in that it propagates through computer networks without user intervention. Unlike a virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program
