BackTrack

installing tor on backtrack 5 r3 through root, bypassing the "not to be run as root" e

OK so to start i'm going to assume you have done nothing to very little on back track to do this but you will need some basic computer skills,

1. Install gedit - as simple as it sound you are installing the text editor gedit, so open the terminal and type/copy and paste this command:

apt-get install gedit

2. Download Tor Browser Bundle using the link ill provide. Just pick the one that suits you, either if it’s 32-bit or 64-bit,

https://www.torproject.org/download/download

3.save the file to your desktop and and copy its name (it will need to be unzipped)

4.when the download is completed (100%) run the commands-

cd Desktop

tar -zvxf <file-name>

the <file-name> being the file name you copied earlier

then click extract

5. you should see on your desktop there is a folder now called "tor-browser_en-US", open it and you should see 5 folders and a tor launcher , if you try and run it you should get the error "cannot be run as root"

6.now comes the fun bit , OK so you need to right click on the tor launcher and click open with >gedit

7. now you should see all the coding for the the launcher, you want to press ctrl +f and type "the tor browser bundle"
(for the record i took this image from another website )
http://www.wiztechie.com/blog/wp-content...ck-5_9.jpg
and you want to change it to
http://www.wiztechie.com/blog/wp-content...k-5_10.jpg

8. now simply save and then double click on the launcher it should come up with tor running as root and then open a window with a loading bar , leave it until the bar is fully loaded then it should open a whole new browser in tor

i hope this was helpful to someone and any improvements post them below and i will amend it (the images you see are not my own , i take no responsibility for them
You would wan't to run tor as root because ????
Or just don't run it as root.
Code
# adduser toru
...
# su -u toru tor-command-here
Put this in /etc/apt/sources.list
Code
deb http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org lucid main

Execute these commands:
Code
gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv 886DDD89
gpg --export A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89 | sudo apt-key add -
apt-get update
apt-get install tor tor-geoipdb
/etc/init.d/tor start

And you'll have TOR. Easier. Btw, why are you installing gedit while its already included with Backtrack?
