I remember seeing somewhere that omni wasn't planning on selling another group after root got closed, is this still the case?

question; Is there a spot available for an official group.

from the tweet of omni I think not, but you can always buy off some group

You will have to buy one from a group owner.

Groups are no longer sold directly from Omni.
