Are Shell Accounts still a good way to hack other systems?

I was looking at michiski's [MEGA PROJECT] and read HACKING INTO COMPUTER SYSTEMS : A Beginners Guide

Found a very interesting section on ISP shell accounts
but from what i perceive, the guide is a couple years outdated,
nonetheless an excellent intro on hacking.
My question is, are ISP shell accounts still being used to hack into systems, I searched on google and found some hits, by i want to know what is the general input on this subject.

They are being used but at a different level.

Most shells now just get uploaded to websites and from there get used for D/Dos purposes.

he's talking about linux or unix shells, and yes you can still hack from them as many companys offer free or paid ones, try http://shells.red-pill.eu for a list.

you could also just run bsd or linux on your own machine.

Ah, I thought he meant website shells for some reason, maybe time to take a rest to let a headache simmer down.

ok got it. thnks for the replies. I actually run linux on an old laptop i use, and trying out freeBSD 9 on Virtual Box, on my main machine. So i'm guessing the guide is really outdated, since a lot of people use linux/BSD now, maybe back in the day it wasn't as easy to acquire linux/BSD? so people used ISP shell accounts? its definitely something I hadn't heard of, up until i read the guide, so that's why i was asking.
I have another question though: Say if i wanted to telnet or ssh to another machine to hack into the system by using a default account and leave a connection to my machine so i can connect later, could I do it with a linux/FreeBSD machine with a hostname that is not tied to an ISP (i.e. i just use a made up host name: jDoe.random.net)?
My question is how would I set up the my UNIX-like OS to be able to remotely log in to another machine?
