Note: This thread is a new, updated version of my old tutorial. Pictures and content is much more clear & less clustered. The other tutorial has been junked. This is the official & final one.

Hello, and welcome to my thread about the basics of Photoshop! This thread is pretty much as what the title states; a tutorial on the basic fundamentals of Photoshop.

Photoshop is a computer software program just like: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe In-Design, Gimp, etc. Using Photoshop, you can alter photographic images to your liking. Mostly anything and everything you see designed has been made off a computer software program whether it be Photoshop, In-Design, Illustrator, etc. These programs are used much more than you imagine. Photoshop can be used to make almost anything and everything. In Photoshop, you can make: text logos, banners, buttons, ribbons, the list is endless. The more you play with it, the more you learn; while'st the more you work with it, the more you can expand your mind and create projects you never thought would be possible!
Always remember: Practice makes perfect.

The only way to get Photoshop (the full version, that is), without paying, is if you get it illegally. I am not going to tell you how you do this nor will I answer any PMs regarding it. If you use your common knowledge, you should know of ways to get this. However, I will link you to where you can get a 30 day trial of Photoshop CS5 for free, without paying.
You can get this here: http://www.photoshopsupport.com/photosho...trial.html

In this part of the tutorial, I will teach you about the blending options available in Photoshop. (I use Photoshop CS5; doesn't matter which one you use). This section includes information about the following:
Note: To access the "Blending Options" tab, right click the layer you are working on and click on "Blending Options"

Drop shadow- can be used by beginners to experts. Drop shadow is the best place to start for beginners. The drop shadow option gives depth to the text of an image.
Inner Shadow- Adds a shadow that falls just inside the edges of the layer’s content; giving the layer a sideline appearance.
The outcome of both:
(Note: If your opacity is higher, your text or image will be shown more in depth. If its lower, it won't show as much. Play around with it till your like it & feel is right. In the end, it all depends on YOU.)

These two options (depending on which one you pick) will either give you a glow from outside the text image, or inside the text image.

Add various combinations of highlights and shadows to a layer
(I personally do not use this option, so I will not make an example of it, just explain what it is)

Applies interior shading that creates a satiny finish.
(Again, I do not use this option, I just explained what it is. These two options don't really arouse me so much. You can use them by all means if you please, I just do not like them)

Fills the layer’s content with a color(of your choosing), gradient(you can pick your own two colors), or pattern(again, you can make your own pattern)

Outlines the object on the current layer using color, a gradient, or a pattern. It is particularly useful on hard-edged shapes such as type.

(Note: The bigger you make the size, the thicker the outline will be. I tend to stay between the ranges of 1-2, to make it look nice.)

There are obviously tons and tons of more shortcuts that you can find. To see a list of helpful ones, go here

Well, that's the end of my tutorial. This is pretty much the simple, basics stuff about Photoshop that will help you better improve your work.
Sooner down the line I will be making text tutorials as well. If you enjoyed this tutorial, please stayed tuned for more!

- Ctrl + Shift + N (New Layer) — This will bring up the new layer dialog box and place a new layer on top of the active layer.
- Ctrl + Shift + C (Copy Merged) — This works basically like the copy command, except you get a merged copy of the composite image sent to the clipboard.
(Note:This is useful if you want to duplicate what you see on the screen into another image file or even another layer.)
- Ctrl + J: Duplicates the layer you already have selected.
- Ctrl + A: Upon opening an image in Photoshop, Ctrl + A will make it so you can edit the full entire image.
- Ctrl + A + C (+V): After you've clicked CTRL + A, click Ctrl + C and this will copy the image. To paste the image into a text you are working on, simply go to that file and press Ctrl + V.
- Ctrl + Shift: Doing this on an image will make it so you can re size it without any difficultly. It will automatically re size it as a rectangle shape. You can either enlarge it or make it smaller and it will not affect the image at all. (Meaning you don't need to go through all the hassle of trying to make it perfect)
- Ctrl + Alt + Shift + K (Show Keyboard Commands) — If you forget any of these commands, or if you want to check on other commands, use this to bring up the help dialog on keyboard shortcuts.
There are obviously tons and tons of more shortcuts that you can find. To see a list of helpful ones, go here
