Hi, I'm stuck in a rut with programming. I "know" Java and Python, but I don't know them. I can't speak them, I'm not a master. I know pretty much all of the basics and I'm familiar with most of the concepts in both languages. If I'm not, it'll take me 10 minutes with my friend, Google, to become familiar with it.
I need a project to work on. People say to "make what you need", but I don't "need" anything. I use the computer for schoolwork and I don't really need anything for that. I want to make something that will be useful, I want to code something that actually has a purpose other than practice. I'm tired of all those simple projects that I write and then forget, simply because I don't need them for anything. Most people are software developers or have websites, or something. They code applications that are going to be used and needed. And thus my question: what would you recommend? I was thinking of contributing to open source, but what? I'm limited by my very short list of known languages - Java and Python. If not open source, then what should I make myself that will actually be useful? I'm not asking you for specific ideas, I need somewhere to bounce ideas off of and some direction to go to for ideas.
I'm interested in networking, but really, any kind of project will interest me. I'm not even too sure what I'm interested in because I haven't done too much coding.
I have a few slow going projects:
Chat (Java) - haven't worked on this for a while
A Pong-like game - you control a paddle and hit blocks with a ball (Java)
Ideas so far:
A text editor customized exactly as I want it (Java?)
Some sort of file sorting/management system for school work (Python?)
Anyways, and ideas, suggestions? I need to get out of this ditch - I need something to make that is useful. Again, I've been looking into open source projects, so any suggestions as to where I should start with that? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
