Hello Hackforums,
This is my second game review for The Empire's gaming sector. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it.

What in CoD's Name Was I Thinking?
Since Call of Duty 2 I have been obsessed with the CoD series. Wasting many an hour away kicking virtual ass and drinking Red Bull (other energy drinks are available). Then it happened; like a left hook from Mike Tyson. BAM! Modern Warfare 2 was released (IDK how I missed CoD4 first time around. I had probably spent all my hard earned money on Red Bull -or other leading energy drink brands-). If truth be told I was actually caught up in Rainbow 6 Vegas 1 A&D. I had a network of close-knit friends that used to play it day-in and day-out. We had a laugh, we kicked some ass, we made a great clan. Then, it started to happen. The cool kid was in town. One by one our lobbies became less full. These Turncoats, these Traitors* started to jump on the proverbial band-wagon. "You will never catch me downing my FAMAS (the weapon of choice in RSV1) and donning a ghillie suit. FOREVER SPAR.. VEGAS!!!!!!" (I never used those words. Just edited my actual quote for dramatic effect).
A week later a friend (pffft some friend) lent me her copy. "Try this." Were her seemingly innocent words (vile Temptress). That very night I was killin' shit and gaining killstreaks like a baus. I was undoubtedly hooked.
To cut a long story short my copy of RSV1 inevitably started to gather a thin layer of dust. I had become one myself.
The Great Mel Brooks once described the CoD epidemic very well:

I played a few games of Battlefield 3. "I will never down my UMP 45 and don dog tags......"

A Re-rebirth
Some time later is was sat on my One staring at the meager selection of games on offer. Battlefield 4 caught my eye. The short-list from the short list came down to that or Ghosts. I had Ghosts on the 360 (which was now joining RSV1 gathering dust) and never really took a shine to it. I am not saying I disliked it but it had lost it's CoD feel, left it's tried and tested roots and died. It was a sad day.
After many dissapointments and wasted money I now look in to games a little before spending £50 on them. So I opened Youtube and saw this video:
After shaking myself from a hypnotic state I vowed that I would get this game. If I had to sell my Grandma to get the money I would have been at the Post Office enquiring about shipping costs. Two days later I had a copy (thankfully I have an income so no selling of elderly reletives was required).
After the agonizing wait that Microsoft likes to make us endure I was playing Conquest and could not believe what I had been missing.

Such Sounds
The audio was so much more realistic. Snipers cracked rather than banged. Heavy arms fire could be heard in the distance. Wow, that roar of the fighter jets was awesome (I am trying to pursude the Mrs. to let me get a soundbar just for this game. Sadly, I am having a little trouble convincing her it is so she can hear Coronation Street on a much clearer level).

Graphically.....OK
The majority of the time the graphics look good. Not great, but acceptable. On closer inspection (with a scope) the graphics seem to just break apart. Solid walls seem to dance. Flickering with ugly lighting effects. This could and should really be fixed.

RATATATATATATAT! The Gameplay
The aforementioned audio does a perfect job of further submersing the player in to an already breath-taking game. Seeing aircraft attacking ground targets, tanks obliterating decaying buldings with mighty 200mm shells, and soldiers parachuting in all around the battlefield you can't help but think this is the closest you will ever come to real battle whilst enjoying the comfort of your armchair.
I play as a sniper most of the time. I am awful (getting better), but it is so fun on BF4. Because people can parachute in (or use the more conventional elevators) sniper fire can come in from just about anywhere. In MW you had spots where you would always find a sniper, and be very limited when it came to finding a less obvious view point. BF4 takes the prize for this element of the FPS-titan face-off hands down.
You find yourself unwillingly taking on a counter-sniper role. This isn't just because moving targets are so damn hard to hit, but due to the genius game mechanics it is incredibly good fun too.
Sadly, due to my addictive nature I can not stop using the sniper rifle so I can not really comment on any of the other weaponry. I have briefly tried the default assault rifle and loved getting up closer to the action. However, I always find myself sulking back to the rooftops with my trusty sniper rifle back in hand. The 30-a-side teams always present me a target from up there.

Conclusion
Despite over-play the game still never ceases to amaze me. Playing the game often makes me question what I was doing playing CoD when this was sat right next to it in the game shop all along.
Sorry, BF4 fans. I had you wrong all of this time.
