Quick Start to Using TrueCrypt [Tutorial]

Quick Start to File Security

What is File Security?
Well, that's actually a broad category, what we will be doing is using Truecrypt to encrypt a file.

How do you do it?
First we are going to need a program called TrueCrypt. You may either search for it, or find it in the Resources Pack in this post.

Now that we have TrueCrypt, lets show you how to hide a file. Open TrueCrypt and press the "Create Volume" button.

Then choose "Create an encrypted file container" now click "Next"
Spoiler (Click to View)

Now "Standard TrueCrypt Volume" then next.
Spoiler (Click to View)

Next it's going to ask for a location to save your encrypted files.
Click "Select File..." and choose a location where it won't get accidentally deleted.

Now we chose which encryption algorithm to use.
For faster encrpytion, choose only a single algorithm. For more security, choose multiple.

Time to choose the size.
You need to make this big enough to hold all the files you are wanting to encrypt, and be able to hold more files in the future if needed.
I choose 100Mbs as an example, but that isn't much.

Password time!
Now you are going to create a password to unlock the files. Remember that the stronger, and longer the password, the more secure your files will be.
MySecretPassword is a horrible password
<Dr@g0nB0r1\1> is much better, even though it is shorter. It uses Upper and Lowercase, as well as Numbers and Symbols.

If you choose a passwordless than 20 characters, TrueCrypt will warn you that is is a weak password.

The next pages is creating the keys needed for the file encryption. Move your mouse around a bit then press "Format"

Success!

Now that you've created an encrpyted container, you need to know how to open it, put stuff in it, and close it again. To open it, go back to TrueCrypt and select an empty letter from the list. I chose "P"
Spoiler (Click to View)

No click "Select File..."
Navigate to the encrpyted file we created earlier and double click it.Spoiler (Click to View)

Now click "Mount"
Spoiler (Click to View)

Type in your password and press "OK"
Spoiler (Click to View)

Now your encrypted file has been decrypted and is waiting for you to store you important documents in it.
Spoiler (Click to View)

Now, since I chose "P" earlier, when I go to "My Computer" it will show a disc on the letter P. Yours will be on whatever letter you chose.
Spoiler (Click to View)

Now you can drag your files into it to put them into the
encrypted container. Whenever you are ready to lock the files
again, open TrueCrypt, click the letter again, and press "Dismount"
Spoiler (Click to View)

Now the Disk that was shown on the letter P is gone and has been encrypted.
Spoiler (Click to View)

To re-open it, just Mount the file again.

So I've put a file in there and dismounted. So the file is now encrypted, yes?

How do I access the newly-encrypted file?

Yes the file is encrypted now. Again open TrueCrypt , click on "select file" , then select your encrypted file (folder). Click on "Mount" , Enter password. Done.
Nice guid men, really helpfull, This will help ppl out

and the file is in there. So if I moved the file out of the new drive I created, will it remain encrypted?

No it won't remain encrypted if you move the file out of the new drive. Once you dismount , your new drive will disappear :)

So how do I encrypt a file that I can send to someone so that it is undetectable?

You can RAR that particular file , add password to it. Now its password protected. You can send it to anyone. But if u want to encrypt any file on your computer , then Truecrypt is best.
Very high quality tutorial. I'll be including a link to this tutorial in a thread that I'm writing.

Ehh he should have metioned the different filesystems. Windows users should select NTFS for partitions larger than 400MB, otherwise stick with FAT. FAT only supports up to 2GB.

Other than that, not bad.

I mean, it does say "quick start" in the title, but I agree, it would have been better if the different filesystem formats were mentioned, but this is good for just storing some text files, pictures... maybe a malicious program or two.

Also, doesn't Truecrypt automatically tell you to change the filesystem type to NTFS if its set to FAT, and you try to create a volume bigger than 2048MB?
