[Tutorial] Mega-Thread: Securing Yourself

Securing Yourself

I suggest that you use an Antivirus + Firewall solution.

Some may argue the effectiveness, or other points, that it is not very effective, however, in the long run, protection against some threats is better than none.

To those who may say, "I use a mac, I don't get viruses.", you're wrong.

There are viruses for OS X and there are known exploits for Safari, with more being discovered daily. Just because you use a mac does not mean you're safe.

It is also important to note, that while OS X does have a significantly smaller number of viruses, none of that matters if your browser is exploited.

Starting with a few recommendations.

Antivius + Firewall

Comodo AntiVirus

The reason I recommend this is because.
1. It is free for the basic version.
2. It also allows you to sandbox any and all applications ran on your system, preventing malware from doing anything harmful to your computer.

Download Comodo here:

1. Download the file from the link above. Once installed, run the program.

2. You should be greeted with an install screen.

3. Click through the next few screens until asked whether or not to install Geekbuddy.

4. Uncheck Geekbuddy, make sure it isn't installed.

5. Restart your computer once the installation has finished.

6. After restarting, open up the control panel for Comodo AV/Firewall.

7. Click on Defense+ Tab.

8. click on the Defense+ Settings button.

9. Click on Sandbox Settings tab in the new window.

10. Push the slider to the top, and check all boxes except for "Automatically trust files from trusted installers."

11. Press Ok and close the window, you have now configured your AV successfully.

Second is your browser choice.

Browser: Firefox.

Add Ons: Adblock Plus, NoScript, Ghostery.

I suggest that you use firefox as your default browser due to the security these three add ons supply.

1. You will want to download firefox from HERE:

2. Once you have downloaded and installed Firefox, start it up and go to the "File" button. in the upper left hand corne.

3. From there, select "add ons".

4. Then in the upper right of the window that pops up, search for these three add ons, one after another.
Ghostery
Ad-Block Plus
NoScript

5. Once you have installed those add ons you will need to configure them.

Configuring Ad-Block Plus

Get it here:

Once installed, you must configure it with the relevant filters to your area/tastes.

It also helps stop malware spreading from malicious ads.

To configure the proper filters, you must:

1. Click the firefox tab.

2. Go to extensions.

3. Click options on adblock.

4. Scroll.

5. Find filter preferences.

6. Add the filters you want.

I would suggest:
Fanboy's Filter
Fanboy's Tracking/Stats filter.
EasyList+EasyPrivacy

Configuring Ghostery

Get it HERE:

1. After restaring Firefox and being prompted by the Ghostery first time page, click continue.

2. Click continue again for the next 2 pages.

3. You should now be on a page with 2 checkboxes above a list of several check boxes.

4 Click both checkboxes and click continue.

5. You should now be done, and ready to browse the web without being tracked.

Configuring NoScript

Not really configuration involved.

Not only do you need an AV, but also something that removes malware.

So you're infected
Your first step should be to remove the infected computer from the internet to prevent the infection from worsening.

Next Download and install a copy of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware.
Download HERE:

After installing, it will prompt you to update it. Once it's been updated, run a full system scan. Once finished, it will give you the option of removing any found viruses.

THIS ISN'T A PANACEA. IF YOU'RE INFECTED WITH A ROOTKIT, TAKE YOUR PC TO A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL.

MSBSA

Download this tool HERE:

Once installed and running, you will be presented with a screen offering you three options; Scan a Computer; Scan Multiple Computers; and View Existing Security Scan Reports.

Clicking on the "Scan a Computer" option brings you to another screen showing you options for scanning your PC. It will automatically select the current computer in use. Check the options you want and click scan.

Simple as that :)

Mobile Device Security

You must have rooted your device for some of these options.

Few apps I've got here, uhhh...

PDroid Privacy Protection. (ROOT)

PDroid allows you to block access to the following private data for any application regardless of it's permissions.

BACKUP

Titanium Backup

Titanium Backup is notable because: It's free; It can backup applications; It can remove stock applications installed by your carrier or manufacturer.

Device Backup:

ClockWorkMod ROM allows you to backup your device.

Browsing protection.

Again, I recommend Firefox for android as it allows those desktop add ons I have mentioned above.

AdBlock-Plus
NoScript.

That's it!
I hope you guys enjoy the methods I've posted.

Chrome is shitty and is vuln atm, Comodo is good but it'll annoy you and stop you from installing many programs by restricting your own computer from installing them into program folder

Also, take a look at exploit pack statistics. Chrome is like 3%. In fact, Google Chrome traffic is basically worthless. Internet Explorer is where it's at.

Last time I checked; Google was willing to pay anyone who was able to exploit Chrome $1M+

If Chrome is supposedly capable of being exploited, someone should have a lot of money sitting in their pocket.

Comodo is a clone of chrome & takes longer to update and install patches and so on.... Chrome is better.

He's right.

I think you're talking about ChromeOS, not Google Chrome.

Comodo is a variant of Firefox, not Google Chrome.

My era of providing technical support and malware removal on HackForums is over, so you can stop PM'ing me about it. Sorry.

Actually, he is speaking about Chromium more specifically.

Comodo Dragon Internet Browser is a browser based off of Chrome which is what he probably mistakened himself with. Comodo has 2 browsers.

Comodo Dragon is based off Chrome.
Comodo IceDragon is based off Firefox.

Basically what was implied, yes.

Lmao, you guys really had to argue?

Of course we do. When we have a point to defend, we have to argue.

Okay then, fair enough. Nice to know you "HAVE" to argue.

Aura simply began a discussion with you right now, not an argument. Arguments are rather rude. That is what forums are for, to spread knowledge and discuss. Do not join a forum and expect everything to be dandy candy, especially without discussion.

My point is, I posted this thread to help people. And apparently there has to be an argument over this, and that. That's all, sorry for the misunderstanding.
