Welcome to the big thread on Dogs! This thread will have a ton of information about the top 50 breeds. Each name is directly linked to a page for more information of the specific breed. This thread is designed to show you guys some of the most popular breeds, as well as help find the perfect dog for you. A * next to the name means it is one of my favorites. I have spent a long time writing each description of the breeds and apologize for any mistakes in spelling or grammar. I hope you guys enjoy reading into these breeds of dogs!

[Troye]

Airedale Terrier*

These terriers are a larger breed. They are social dogs that seek your attention. These terriers are intelligent and can be trained at a quick speed. This breed will need a lot of exercise to keep in shape and avoid being mischievous. They are good with kids, but can unintentionally cause harm playing around. They are good with other animals if they grew up with them or are trained well enough.

Akita

This breed is also categorized as large. It is big, tough, and intimidating. The Akita has guard dog instincts, which can cause it to act aggressively towards other pets and humans. They are harder to train, as they are less intelligent and stubborn. This dog requires some exercise and should not be allowed to roam outside of a fenced area.

Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute is another large breed of dog. They are commonly used for sleds in the northern parts of the world. They are strong and closely related to wolves. They are great with people, but show dominance to other dogs. The Malamute requires a lot of training and exercise. You will need to watch this breed when it comes to food and digging. They love to dig holes as well as steal your pizza off the counter.

Australian Shepherd*

The Australian Shepherd is one of my favorite breeds. They are intelligent, calm, caring, and active. These dogs need tons and tons of running and exercise to be happy and healthy. They love people, but can be territorial and cautious around strangers and other animals. They shed a lot and require some brushing to remove excess fur. The Australian Shepherd can make great guard dogs and are trained easily.

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is a medium sized dog that is peaceful and kind. They have smaller legs, making them generally shorter than dogs similar to their weight. These dogs have great noses and love to follow scents they pick up. The Basset Hound loves being around people and kids. They will play outside, sleep in your bed with you, or relax and sit with you. They are harder to train and require more attention and obedience.

Beagle*

The Beagle is another fantastic dog. They are friendly and energetic. Beagles are a smaller sized dog that need a lot of exercise. They are friendly to your family and to children. Beagles are very curious and follow mysterious scents they pick up. You need to be careful and watch them in open areas as well as near your food. Make sure to give your beagle tons of love!

Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog are a large breed of dog. They aren't as energetic as other breeds, but need constant exercise. They shed a lot, so you will need to brush them and vacuum a lot. They make decent guard dogs and will protect you from anything. The Bernese Mountain Dog is great with children and is super calm around humans. These dogs are very intelligent and will love to spend a ton of time by your side.

Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is a small breed of dog. They are kind and playful in nature. They virtually don't shed, leaving you with less house clean up. They are great with kids, but will get snappy if bullied. These dogs love to be the center of attention and make a great companion for older people.

Bloodhound

Bloodhounds are another larger breed. They are very stubborn, but extremely loyal when you prove yourself to them. Younger Bloodhounds are very energetic and need tons of exercise. Older Bloodhounds are lazier and can sleep more. They are great with children and other people. Make sure to give your Bloodhound a ton of attention and love!

Broder Collies are an amazing breed of dog. They are extremely active and love to play. Your Border Collie will need tons of exercise and play time. They are great with children, but you should always keep an eye out. They can get over excited and accidentally harm younger children. The Border Collie is one of the most intelligent breeds of dog in the world. They are easy to train and make a loving pet.

Boston Terrier

The Boston Terriers are a small breed. They are very affectionate and exciting. Make sure that you show great leadership or they will think they run the show. They are great with children and love to be around everyone. They love attention and will find a way onto your bed to cuddle with you.

Boxer

The Boxer is a larger dog. They are adorable and want to be your lap dog. They are very playful and will always be pushing you to play with them. Boxers are great with cats, but farm animals are a no. They are also great with children, but can accidentally harm them by being boisterous.

Brittany*

This is probably one of the most adorable breeds on this list. They are a small to medium sized dog. They are great outdoor type dogs and love to play. Brittany dogs are very intelligent and love to work. They are great with children and other pets as well. Make sure you have a space in your schedule to run them and play.

Bulldog

The Bulldog is a medium sized dog given it is pretty heavy. They are known for one thing, being lazy. Bulldogs love to lay around and have a lot of health risks if over worked. They are equivalent to a fat guy in a reclining chair. They are great with children and other types of dogs. Bulldogs are great pets, but must be checked on regularly and have a lot of health problems.

Bullmastiff

Bullmastiffs are huge dogs. They are one of the biggest on this list. They are very good companions and will love you unconditionally. They are very protective of their family and are territorial. Bullmastiffs are great with children and only bark when they sense a threat. They aren't the best with other dogs, so early interactions are needed. They don't need a ton of exercise and can live comfortably in almost any environment.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Nicknamed "The Comforter Spaniel", these dogs love people. They are very small in size and fit perfectly on your lap, bed, or next to you on the sofa. They are intelligent dogs and are very quick to pick up discipline and commands. They love kids, but can risk being injured because they are so small. If you want a small dog to cuddle and relax with, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the one you want.

Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog. They are quick, cocky, and feisty. They love to cuddle and sit with you. Chihuahuas are very curious, but also very cautious. They are alright with kids, but can get nasty if pushed or threatened.

Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker Spaniel is a small breed of dog. They used to be bred as a hunting dogs, but have been turned into house pets in the recent years. They are attention seekers all day and crave your love. They are amazing with kids and other dogs. They are food snatchers, so you will need to watch your stuff.

Collie*

Collies are a larger breed of dog. There are two different types. Long haired and smoothed hair. They are overall great dogs that love a family environment. They love children and are good with other pets. Collies are very intelligent. They pick up routines and can tell when your car is pulling up or when you are walking out the door. They need a lot of attention and love to play and exercise.

Dachshund

Dachshunds are another small breed of dog. They come in 3 variations of long haired, smooth haired, and wired hair. They were originally bred to be hunting dogs and can be bossy in the household. It is important to train them early on. They are a one-man dog and will form a special bond with one person. They are cautious with other dogs, but can form a friendship after getting to know them. They are alright with children, but will get snappy when teased.

Doberman Pinscher*

Doberman Pinschers are a larger breed of dog. They are great guard and watch dogs. They have a guard dog reputation that detours people from them. They need a leader figure to follow as well as tons of attention. Pinschers need some training, but have guard dog instincts already built into them. They are great with children and get very protective of them. If you train your Doberman right, they can make great family dogs.

English Springer Spaniel

English Springer Spaniels are a small to medium size breed. They are loyal, trustworthy, and very affectionate. They are very kind and love to be by a person's side. They love to run and need constant exercise. A bored or lonely Spaniel can have bad behavior and will misbehave. It is best to train them early on, as they need an authoritative figure who is calm, but firm. They love the water and will often come back inside muddy or wet. They are great with children and other dogs as well.

French Bulldog

French bulldogs are smaller than English bulldogs. They are great family pets and love children. They are somewhat difficult to train because they are a bit stubborn. They make great lounge dogs and love to nap with you. Because of their short snout, they need to be kept out of heat and not over worked. French bulldogs are also great with other pets, but can struggle with cats.

German Shepherd*

The German Shepherd is another one of my favorites. They are work dogs and need tons of exercise and play time. They are also a large breed of dog. German Shepherds are great watch dogs, guard dogs, are highly intelligent, and fearless. They are commonly used as K-9 units in most police forces. They do shed a lot, so be ready to vacuum a lot and brush them. They need a leader figure from day one or they will misbehave a lot. German Shepherds are great with kids and people they grow up with, but are cautious with others. They make great family pets as well as outstanding guard dogs.

German Shorthaired Pointer*

The German Shorthaired Pointer is another large breed. They were originally bred as hunting dogs and have tons of energy. They are great to take hiking or to a lake. These pointers love to swim, run, and fetch. They are great with children, but can be accidentally reckless with younger children. They are good with other pets, but love to chase cats. German shorthaired pointers love to please their master, making it easy to train them. They are very affectionate dogs that love to play and cuddle with you.

Golden Retriever*

Golden Retrievers are another one of my favorite breeds. I like to relate them to Labs, but with longer hair. They are a larger breed and love to play. They love everyone and everything. Golden retrievers are great with all other pets and gentle with children. They love to play and need exercise every now and then. They love to run, swim, fetch, and play with anyone willing to. Golden retrievers make great pets and are a man's best friend.

Great Dane

The Great Dane breed is a very large breed. They are known as a gentle giant and are very calm and friendly. They were originally bred as hunting dogs, but have been adopted into the household. They love children, but can accidentally hurt them with their big size. They need constant exercise and walks to stay in shape. It is a good idea to train them not to jump on people as they can grow to be taller than a human. They are loyal dogs and make a great pet for big dog lovers.

Havanese

Havanese dogs are a small breed. They are loving, kind, and affectionate. These little dogs are great for older couples as well as smaller families. They require a lot of attention and aim to please their owners. They are great with children and other pets. They do not need tons of exercise, as they will get it playing around the house. They are not shy with new people and love getting attention. If you want a small dog to play with and cuddle with, the Havanese is the perfect dog for you.

Labrador Retriever*

Labrador Retrievers are my favorite breed of dogs. They are kind, happy, energetic, and loving. They are super excited to see you when you come home or wake up. Labs are extremely active and require a lot of play time and exercise. They are a large breed, but act like puppies for a while. They are easy to train and very smart. Labs are amazing with kids and all kinds of people they interact with. They are also great with other animals.

Maltese

The Maltese is another small breed. They are one of the smallest on this list. They are affectionate, friendly, and an accessory. These little dogs make great companions and love to be with you. They love walks, car rides, and love to play. They are harder to house train and take time to do so. They are great with other pets and good with older kids. They might bite younger children because they are so small.

Mastiff

The Mastiff is a large dog. They are one of the best guard god breeds as well. They only bark when there is a reason to. They love to be with their family and will always be close by. They require some exercise, but do not play a lot. They love to sleep on your feet or have their head in your lap. Mastiffs are good with children, but can accidentally knock them over with their size. They are alright with other animals, but need to be brought up with them at an early age.

Miniature Pinscher*

Miniature Pinschers are a small breed, but don't realize it. They are loving, fearless, and brave. Like their larger relatives, they make amazing guard dogs. They will only bark if someone is at your door. They are cautious of other people and pets, but do not act aggressively. They are great with kids, unless teased or threatened. Overall, miniautre pinschers are great little guard dogs that love their owners.

The miniature poodle is another small breed. They are loyal, intelligent, and love to please. They are one of the most intelligent breeds, making them easy to train. They love to be by your side and will want to spend all of their time with you. They are energetic and love to play and swim. Miniature poodles are great with other pets and patient with children. Overall, they are one of the best breeds for a house dog.

The Miniature Schnauzer is a small dog breed. They are energetic, brave, and curious dogs. For their size, the mini schnauzer is sturdy and tough. They aim to please and can be very loving. They are one of the easiest breeds to train and are extremely intelligent. They are great with kids, but will bite if bullied or teased. The Miniature Schnauzer is a great dog that loves to be with you and doesn't back down from a fight.

The Newfoundland breed is huge. They are great big furry beasts that are very gentle. They are bred to be working dogs and love to be a part of the family. They need to be motivated to exercise, so prepare to call your newfoundland your running partner. They are major shedding dogs, so you better have a fresh vacuum and a big brush. They are very gentle with children and love a little toddler to follow around.

Papillon

The Papillion is another small breed. They were bred to be companion dogs. These dogs are loving, energetic, want to be with you at all times. They do not to well with small children and large dogs in risk of being hurt. They love cats and other small dogs. Papillions will be with you everywhere. They will want to sleep with you, play with you, and relax on the couch with you. They do bark a lot, but are one of the best at obedience training. If they are lonely there can be serious health problems including self mutilation. Make sure your papillion is stress free and you will have a wonderful experience.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi*

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a small to meduim sized breed. They are loving, playful, and gentle. The corgi needs to have a leader and know its place in the pack. They are great with children, but wary of strangers. It is best to train them at a young age. These dogs love to explore, see new places, and play. They make an ideal family dog.

The Pomeranian dog is a small breed. They are cocky, intelligent, and affectionate. They make great pets for elderly or ill people. They love to cuddle up in your lap or on the couch. They don't need a lot of exercise, but will need a lot of attention from their owners. Pomeranian's are great with children, but need supervision as they are small.

The Poodle is a larger breed. Poodles, contrary to popular belief, are very athletic and rugged. They are very intelligent and easy to train. Poodles are great with children and other dogs. They do not shed as much as other dogs as well. Poodles are very loving and will always want to be with you, making them the perfect companion.

Pug

Pugs are a small breed, but they come with a huge personality. These dogs were bred to be your companion. They are playful, happy, and come with a lot of affection. They do not need a ton of exercise and shouldn't be overworked. They are not a fan of water, fetch, or most thrown toys. They are great with children, other dogs, and strangers. Like the bulldog, they need to be in cool environments because of their short snouts. Make sure to watch their weight as they can get obese. Pugs are great little dogs to make a family complete.

Rottweilers are a large breed of dog. They are known for being an intimidating guard dog and do not back down from a fight. They are known as the best guard dog in the world. They are shown in many movies, shows, and books as the big bad dog that chases people down. They are extremely intelligent and protective. They are not the best with other dogs and can easily attack them without warning. They are great with children and are very protective over them. They will love to be around the family and are very protective.

Saint Bernard*

The Saint Bernard breed is on the list of one of the biggest dogs. They are another gentle giant breed. They are known for being very gentle with children and will even avoid trying to hurt them. They are extremely calm and patient with children. You will need to have your vacuum ready as they do shed a lot. They are a bit hard to train, so you will need to start at an early age. Saint Bernard's were originally bred as search and rescue dogs and need exercise. Be careful, they can overheat easily having a big mass and lots of fur. They are a great big edition to your family.

Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog is a small to medium sized dog. They are very good at learning their master's moods and feelings. They know when you want to play, cry, or sleep and will react appropriately. The Shetland Sheepdog is very active and loves the outdoors. They have a lot of hair which means a lot of shedding. They are great with children, but are distrustful of strangers. It is best to socialize them at an early age. Shetland Sheepdogs are great with other dogs as well.

The Shih Tzu is a small breed of dog. They are considered lap dogs who love your attention. They can get dominant, so it is important to be the leader of the home. Shih Tzu's are untrustworthy with children and strangers. They are alright with other dogs, but they should be a smaller breed. They don't need a ton of exercise as they will get it running around the house. They make great family dogs for elderly people.

The Siberian Husky is a medium to large sized breed. They are designed to be sled dogs, but have been adapted to be family dogs. They are very active dogs with great endurance. Running and exercise is a must for these dogs. Companionship is very important to these dogs whether it be other dogs or people. They are not great guard dogs and will even lick someone who broke in. They are great with child and other dogs. The Siberian Husky is a very social dog that loves to meet other people. You need to train yours in the early years, as they can get dominate and take over the leadership role.

Toy Poodle

The Toy Poodle is a small dog breed. They are a small version of the bigger breed of poodle. They are intelligent, active, and loving. These dogs also make very good watch dogs, but because of their size they are not good guard dogs. The toy poodle loves to play, swim, and run around. They also virtually do not shed, making cleaning them easy. Toy poodles are great with all people and are very social. They are also very great with other pets. If you want a small dog that loves to play and cuddle, you should go with a poodle.

The Vizsla is a large dog breed. They can get very attached to their owner and will follow them everywhere. They are very touchy and love to sleep with you. The vizsla is a very active dog and requires a lot of exercise. They also love to swim, fetch, and jog with you. You will need to watch you vizsla as they will eat anything and everything. They are good with children, but will knock over a baby for a toy. You will need to train you vizsla fairly early as they can get mischievous without it. They are alright with other dogs, but need to be watched. If you want a big dog that loves you dearly, the vizsla is a great dog for you.

The Weimaraner is a large dog. They are one of the most kind and loving species in the world. They will follow you everywhere around the house and love to be in physical contact with you. They were originally bred to be hunting dogs and love to spend time outdoors. The Weimaraner loves to swim, hunt, hike, and run. They are alright with other dogs, but can become aggressive. They are bad with small animals, given their hunting instincts.

West Highland White Terrier

The West Highland White Terrier is a small breed of dog. They make excellent watch dogs, but would lick the robber instead of attacking them. Even though they are small, they are not lap dogs. Westies love to play and run around. They love to walk, fetch, and swim. They are not the best with kids, as they will snap at rude children or become dominant. The west highland white terrier are great for a couple that doesn't have children or has older children.

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog breed. They are feisty, energetic, and loving of their owner. You must be careful though, if you do not show leadership this dog will take over and ignore your commands. They make great watchdogs and will bark when someone is at your door. Small children should be monitored when playing with a Yorkshire terrier as they can accidentally hurt them. The Yorkshire terrier is a bit bratty with other dogs and can be suspicious of strangers. These dogs make great pets for older couples and elderly couples.
