What is dualbooting?
Multi booting, or dual booting is basically running 2 or more operating systems on one machine. I will not be installing a new operating system (so I will be livebooting), but I will explain how to install a new one besides your current windows system. If you want to get rid of it completely, that's also possible. I prefer dualbooting over using a virtual machine, because everything just runs smoother, and I encounter less problems.
What do we need?
To test a new operating system, we'll need the following:
- Access to your BIOS
- USB Stick or a writeable DVD disc
- Burning program like CDBurnerXP if you're going to burn the operating system to a DVD
- UNetbootin if you're going to write the operating system to an USB stick
- .iso file of your desired operating system
Let's begin
The first thing you want to do is download the programs and files necessary. Download the programs I provided you with in the list above. When you have done that, download an operating system. If you don't have one in mind, try one of these:
Those are just a few you can use to start. If you another operating system, just use that one.
Next, you'll want to write the files to your USB/DVD. Follow this video if you are planning to boot from USB. If you are planning to write an operating system to a DVD with CDBurnerXP, read the steps below.
- 1. Open up CDBurnerXP
2. Select "Write iso to CD/DVD"
3. Leave the settings as they are
4. Select your .iso file
5. Start the burning process
6. Wait until it's finished
When the burning process is finished, your disk tray will automatically open. Leave it open.
Next, we'll be entering the BIOS. Shut down your computer and wait until the loading screen of your brand comes up. If you don't know how to access your BIOS, search it up, it's mostly done by pressing F8, F12 or del. When you're inside your BIOS, search for "Boot settings" or "Advanced BIOS settings." When you've found that, enable "Boot from CD/DVD/USB" or something similar. Then go to your boot settings and select "Boot order." Put it in this order:
- 1. USB or DVD
2. Hard Drive
3. Removable
This will cause your computer to prioritize booting from an USB or DVD disc. You can change it back whenever you want.
Press "Save settings and exit" and you will boot from your USB/DVD.
Congratulations, you've succesfully dualbooted/live booted. From here you can install your booted operating system besides Windows, or install it over Windows.
It's great to do this if you want to test out *nix distros.
I hope you learned something from this tutorial.
