You can follow this simple guide to easily install a fully working retail version of OS X Mavericks in VMware. You can post any questions you might have, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. This VM acts just like an Apple computer would - completely upgradeable etc.

Requirements: VMware Player, OSX Mavericks ISO, VMware Unlocker for OS X

1) Install VMware Player
2) Download OS X Mavericks ISO
3) Download VMware Unlocker
4) Extract VMware Unlocker Folder
5) Execute Unlocker in accordance to your host OS
6) Create VM in VMware and boot into ISO
7) Install OS X to VM
8) Enjoy!

Yes, sort of similar I suppose. OS X is locked down to not be allowed to run off a computer other than one that is Apple endorsed. The unlocker allows OS X to boot.
