I know my question is long, but I this is such a pain I wanted to be thorough. I need a networking guardian angel here before I shoot myself. Before I tried this I knew zero networking stuff. Hell I only just found out what a DNS is, so be gentle with me :D
Ok, firstly here is my set up and what I am trying to do:
I have ubuntu server (v13.1) set up on an old machine. On the server I have installed and set up Apache and Webmin(v1.69). The idea is that I can leave this running, and any machines on my local network can access the server remotely through SSH and Webmin. I want to host a web app an the server that a few of us are working on, so we can test and develop it on a kinda "mock ecosystem" to play around with different things and see how it works.
On this I want to have 2 named domains, admin.mysite.lan, and mysite.lan and in this director structure:
What works so far:
Anyone one the network can open up Webmin either with the server ip or servername.lan (port 10000) fine. SSH works too. So then I moved onto Apache, which has a default virtual host set up, and any webpages I put in it's root directory loads fine in my browser with the ip or servername.lan (port 80).
The problem:
I try to set up a virtual host, following every guide and tip I could read, for one of the sites. I configured the DNS with BIND to point the named domains to the right ip and root directory. And nope. Nothing. Firefox just gives me the "server not found page". Thinking the DNS was complicating things a bit, I tried using just an ip. Same. Nothing. Zilch.
I have been banging my head off a wall with this for a week, tried every tip trick and guide and still nothing. If somebody knows how all this works and can walk me through it I'll be able to sleep finally
