Vmware linux partition expand

Hi,

I have a vmware running linux. The current ext4 partition is 20GB and i have 17GB used. Now im trying to install an application which needs 5GB so i will need to expand my partition.

I changed the virtual machine's size and now i have the following 6GB unacllocated space. How can i expand main partition to use the other 6GB?

I tried with gparted but doesnt give me that option.

Just saying, next time ask this question in the Linux, FreeBSD, and Unix Flavors section alright ? Since that issue wasn't related to the VM, but the OS you were running, alright ? 🙂
Fiat justitia ruat cælum

My era of providing technical support and malware removal on HackForums is over, so you can stop PM'ing me about it. Sorry.
Im sorry, you are right. It would fit in VM section if i had a problem expanding VM MACHINE disk size, not the O.S 😊

you can close it though... i have managed to do it.

I found many articles on the net describing complicated solutions and creepy scenarios.

What worked for me was pretty simple.

1. Expanded VM disk space from VM Settings. This created unallocated partition on the disk.

2. Booted a kali live CD (you can change the boot sequence of a VM by pressing F2 on boot)

3. I run gparted. This was the disk prior changing anything

4. I deleted linux swap partition and left with 2. I then CHANGED primary partition and dragged it to use the whole space of unallcoated disk.

5. Saved changes and restarted. All working fine.

ALWAYS remember to backup your system prior making any changes to the partitions. The slight mistake may end up in an unbootable system. Either do backup of your VM to another folder or create Snapshot before proceeding.
