[Android] I can't get into recovery mode Galaxy S4

Ok, so I recently rooted my Verizon Galaxy S4 after having it stock for a year. I wanted to get a new ROM, so I tried to install TWRP recovery, but I didn't know that you have to be on a certain firmware, and I'm not on it (I'm on NC5). So I tried to install the proper one, safestrap, but it's still not working. Whenever I restart my phone, it immediately goes to download mode if I try to regularly boot or try to go to recovery. The only way to get it to start is to actually try to enter download mode, and then cancel it using volume down, and then it boots up fine. I've tried to do some research on this but everything other people are doing to fix this doesn't work for me. I tried to reinstall safestrap and uninstall then install again.

Anyone here know what to do?

Thanks in advance.

edit: and also, is there a way to where I can download the bootloader from nc5 to one of the other ones so that I can use twrp?

The only way to use twrp is downgrade the bootloader. But idk why you would wanna do that as safe strap is based off twrp.

First a couple questions,
1. Are you rooted?
2. Is your install from Unknown Sources checked?
3. Do you have busy box installed?
4. Did you install the Safestrap.apk then enter the application and install the recovery?
5. When your phone boots up does it display Samsung with a paddle lock icon and 'Custom' under it?\
6. Do you get a 'SAFESTRAP: Disabled' after the Samsung bootlogo?

Edit: You may want to just backup and pictures or music and perform a Hard Reset and start from fresh.

Well my understanding is the having the lower version bootloader allows you to install custom ROMs that aren't touchwiz(?) I think based and are AOSP.
1. Yes, rooted.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.
4. Yes.
5. Yes it has the padlock.
6. No, it doesn't have this. It can't boot into recovery mode at all and doesn't say anything after the samsung logo.

Yea I decided I'm probably going to backup all my stuff on my phone and then see if theres anything I can do. The only thing I would Odin back to stock and delete internal data for (I have a lottt of music on my phone) is for downgrading bootloader for above reasons. Thanks for the help and any future advice.

You dont have to take my suggestion but i would stay on NC5 and try out HyperDrive RLS19. Thats the rom im running and its really customizable. It has the most support than any other rom for the S4. Just a suggestion.

But if you do decide to stay on NC5 perform a reset cause the last flash of the wrong recovery might cause issues in the future. And your recovery is something you do NOT want fucking up in the future.

Did you make a backup of the ROM when you flashed it? You might be able to flash it back via Odin.
