Hello HF!
I'm here to help you with jailbreaking your PS3! I've downgraded a few PS3's using an E3-Flasher so I know alot about it.
I can also help you with homebrew and such.
If you need help, just post your question here and I'll answer it ASAP!

BEFORE YOU ASK:
You can only downgrade if your PS3 has been on 3.55 before and you can only downgrade using a hardware flasher, like E3-Flasher, ProgSkeet ect ect
I will not help you with pirating games or any other illegal things, but I can help you with modding games.
My personal tips:
Use Rebug. It has great features like built in QA Flag, and easily go from DEX to CEX.
If you are not modding, stay on CEX, if you are modding, switch to DEX. DEX gives you alot more features than CEX, like more mod menus and better aimbots.
Always do your research before doing anything
Always take your precautions when going online. Like spoofing your CID, cleaning your history and more.
Ask here if you're not sure about what you are doing. I will gladly help you, and so will other users.
Don't play on the newest games. Higher banrisk, almost a guaranteed ban,
Never open homebrew while online
When using an E3-Flasher, always tape a coin on the NOR chip to create pressure so it fits correctly, otherwise you would need to sand the edges of the clip so you hear the click when you put it on
Always remember to plug in the fan when running the E3-Flasher. Some people think its not a big deal since its in an open environment, but it will overheat.
Take pictures of the inside of your PS3. Take note of the wires and where they are supposed to be plugged in, and always remember the screws. When I put back my PS3, I had 3 screws left :P

I'll try answer a few things that i have read even though some have already been answered.
CEX and DEX, CEX is retail DEX is developer/debug. if your new to CFW id say go CEX because its more user friendly and then later on convert to DEX if you feel the need. (i converted straight to DEX with my first console and although it was good i just felt i couldn't use it to its potential, i ended up selling it after about 6 months and have never had DEX again.)
What i like a about CEX is that its simple you turn your ps3 on and sign in and away you go, RTM'ing is fully wireless! something i dislike is that it seems easier to get CID (console id) banned, i have been CID banned playing mw3 only and thats a game that i think they gave up on monitoring.
What i liked about DEX was more options available on RTM tools, never used anti-ban and never got CID banned in 6 months while playing Bo2 and Mw3. What i didn't like though was the fact to run TMAPI you need to be wired to your ps3 (Can be used wireless with the same program CEX uses but then theres you'r extra options with RTM tools gone, And having to do things before being able to sign in (not complicated just annoying)
I used Rebug 4.6.1 D-Rex seemed to be a decent cfw i also hear the ITA DEX cfw is good.
On CEX i stick to Rogero 4.55 cfw i have used Habib cfw but prefer Rogero.
Look for E3 flashers on aliexpress.com they ship WORLDWIDE i got my E3 limited for i think 70 or 80 Aud delivered to my house.
Cfw Ps3's can be played online they just need to be spoofed to the current Firmware, from what i remember with my first console (DEX) i needed the Rebug updater by BitsBubba aswell as a spoofer i may not be %100 correct it was a while ago
Another pro about DEX is i didn't have to spoof again until about a month after the next update came out! (Not sure why)
Getting valid NOR dumps can sometimes be a bit tricky, as the OP said put a coin or something on the back thick enough so that it holds a bit of pressure against it, You can also shave the bottom step of the edge of the off the clip to get it to sit flusher. (Its only plastic)
If you do decide to downgrade your self MAKE SURE you READ READ READ before doing it.
If you buy a Ps3 on 3.55 Ofw make sure it has the warranty sticker still on it or its probably just been downgraded (they sell for more then jail broken consoles most of the time)
If you're console is a Phat/Piano make sure you install a fan control and turn it up, like right up!! otherwise it will freeze often due to overheating or could even ylod.

Here's a list of downgradable/jailbreakable models.
Any slims that starts with:
CECH-20
CECH-21
CECH-25 NOTE YOUR MINIMUM FIRMWARE NEEDS TO BE 3.55 OR LOWER
Any phats that starts with:
CECHH
CECHJ
CECHK
CECHL
CECHP
To check your minimum firmare, download MinVrCheck and put it on your USB, then plug it into the right USB port on your PS3.
Then update via media storage.

Wrong. There are CFW designed to be installed on 3.55 OFW which will bring your PS3 to 4.55 while still running a CFW, such as Rebug REX. You have access to PlayStation+ and multiplayer, and you can install game updates and access PSN. Where have you been?

Wrong, wrong, wrong, and wrong. I really can't think of any disadvantages to having a cfw ps3 over an ofw one.
