Seedboxes and torrents.

A lot of people grab what they want off torrents and don't think much about it. But I've always been a fan of torrenting communities where your upload is kept track of. So much so Comcast banned me for a year, because my upload was to high. So how do we get around something like that, and prevent ourselves from getting nasty DMCA notices?

Seedboxes

I use a seedbox, in particular from seeboxes.cc. They are awesome sauce. Essentially they have the same set up that I had with my at home box, and they have some really nice Web stuff for noobs.

So on my home box, and on seedboxes, I ran rtorrent, and you have a watch folder, that essentially looks for .torrent files, and then when it finds them it loads them up and starts downloading.

If you're a noob you can use the web interface to do this.

I do not, if I want to upload my .torrent files, let's say I'm browsing kickass.to, or I'm on some of the cooler invite only torrent sites. Animebytes, funfile, demonoid, what.cd, what have you, I can download a bunch of torrent files then scp them to my watch directory, like so:

Code
IFS=$(echo -en "\n\b");for i in $(find . -cmin -7 | grep -i "torrent$" ); do scp -r $i bsdpunk@seedbox:~/torrents/watch/; done

That will grab all the torrent files I downloaded in the last seven minutes, in the directory it is run, and upload to my seed box.

Like I said if you get a seedbox with seedboxes.cc you don't have to do that, you can just click click click around the web interface(fuckin windows goobers).

And then when I want to download my shit to my box I just rsync it down:

Code
rsync -avg -P bsdpunk@seedbox:~/torrents/downloads downloads/

So the good thing about using rsync, is if you use it on a consistent directory, it will never download something you already have. Now lets say you don't want to download all your Batman stuff yet, you could do something like this:

Code
rsync -avg --exclude='Bat*' -P bsdpunk@seedbox:~/torrents/downloads downloads

This will exclude all the matches for Bat with anything after bat. If you are a winblows fag and you get a seedbox from somewhere, and you use the rutorrent web interface good for you, but you might want to try installing cygwin so you can run these commands on your machine, and manage your torrents better.

Oh and..

WHY SEED:

Well the benefits are obvious if you're on private torrent networks, your ratio will be better, you won't get kicked, etc. If you're not on private networks, you might be helping people out, which I'm sure none of you fucks care about. But I do so yeah.

If you want some private invites you should...be nice to people like me, become our friends... then ask...duh huh.

Seedboxes rock, I really like seedboxes.cc just because the set up is exactly what I want, but there are others with other setups. Google it.

Thanks for the tutorial on this. I have been thinking of renting a seedbox myself. I usually hang out on Kat.to
I usually just use your basic torrenting (the client that came with ubuntu 14.04 (transmission bittorrent client) and run everything through a vpn. I do believe in sharing though and actually like to maintain a high ratio (I think it is 11.0 right now; not spectacular but if everyone even just had a positive one). I do think there are certain things that shouldn't be torrented but that is another discussion....

What do you mean certain things shouldn't be torrented? If one thing can be torrented than another should be able to. Why should one have a priority over another?

So basic torrenting is great. I've just had problems with ISPs, and DMCAs even when using Dynamic Hash Tables and other forms of obfuscation. And personally I would love to dig into that stuff more, and set up a box that does the same thing my seed box does. But the bandwidth I currently have is pretty prohibitive and even if I was protecting myself from all of that, I wouldn't get near the speeds. Because pulling down like gigs and gigs of torrents on my seedbox is like problem, quick as shit. And the lack of overhead on rsync, makes it quicker than if I just did it directly on my box.
