Rails or PHP (forum development)

Hey,
; I'm creating a forum website with a friend. My friend knows web design pretty well and I am better at managing or developing back-ends (after I learn the language, of course).
; I'm wondering, for the long run, should the forum be powered by Rails or PHP? Personally I think that Rails code looks sexier, but in the long run that won't matter. Which one should I use?
; Also, are there any forum engines that you guys would recommend? I'm talking about something that would have a sufficient back-end already built and then we can create the front-end fairly quickly using the engine. Not talking about software like Discourse.
Do I have any idea of what I'm talking about?

Thanks 🎉!
Ruby on Rails is becoming pretty obsolete now that Node.js + Express beats its speed and uses JavaScript. If I were you, I would use PHP and Laravel (a PHP web framework). Laravel will handle your user authentication, it will make database queries more elegant, and it will set up an MVC architecture in your code which is much more modern and versatile :)

Alright, thanks man that was pretty HQ. I didn't know that Rails was already becoming obsolete :O -- so is it safe to say the PHP will continue to reign for years to come?

Take me saying that Rails is becoming obsolete with a grain of salt - it's still widely popular. However, it's popularity is dropping since node.js came around, and I for one see it dying.

PHP is going to reign for a while next to Node and Express; however, that's only because it's everywhere. Anything as big as PHP is hard to kill. For most uses it's a solid language, I think Laravel makes it bareable though. I would never code a whole web application in pure PHP.
I never got the time to actually learn to work with a framework. I usually just code stuff from the bottom up. PHP will be pretty hard to kill. Almost all hosts provide support for it.

Rails is more powerful and got a biggest community of developpers arround plugins and gem.
While PHP is older and have tons of good Framework (Laraval is not that good in my opinion, the main (and only) dev is slow and don't want to open his code to others authors.)

You should probably go with the one you know better.
I'll eat my shoes if rails dies. Rails and node are both still super amazing and both excel in their respective situations. Im primarily node but ill always recommend rails over node if you want to build a monolithic system. :)
There is already a great forum solution in rails called discourse
PHP is easier to learn, safer for beginners (might look bad, but a lot of stuff is "protected as they come") and well, WIDELY popular. Thats why it wont die anytime near soon.
As opposed Ruby's one of biggest adventages was speed, and now with release of node.js which has easier syntax (even same syntax for server/frontend js), and is beating it in speed, Ruby will most likely fade away slowly.
