you know how we watch those crime movies or TV shows and they always show the enemy, calling the cops and bragging about how great they are, in the end the cops track them down with their phone numbers if they talk for a certain amount of time. well i just wanted to know if that was possible. and if it is how do we do it. thanks. xD

they can but they have to use certain tools to track down threw radio waves sounds were u r if ur using a cell possibly the chip thats inside it sends off a satalite signal stuff like that ....

Cell phones connect to the telephone exchanges thru towers... The towers send a particular signal to each phones and the phones respond back... that's how the connection is made in real....

The time taken for a signal to reach and the phone to respond back can give an approx distance of the cell from the tower... So it gives a circle where the cell can be... If more than one tower is present in the are, they can find the exact location by Triangulation Method... But you need the help from the exchange to do it... (Police forces and similar wuthorities has got the right to it....)

Satellite phones connect directly to satellites as you know and you need access to the satellites in the area which is connecting to the cell to trace it...

Hope this gives you how it is possible for the cops to trace the phones....

ah ok, that was a really good specific description. so now i know that it is possible but getting access to the satellite will not be easy and even if i do, it might be against the laws. ah well.....
