.NET

.Net open source

In case people didn't see: https://github.com/dotnet/coreclr they are finally transitioning everything over to open source. It was news a while ago, but it all just started happening so for those that didn't see, have at it ^^
incase people don't quite understand: https://github.com/dotnet/corefx for the actual libraries.
Really? No comments on this? This is great news. There's so much neat stuff to find in this repo it's unbelievable.

If any of you are working on obfuscators this should be a goldmine of information for you.
Probably coding some useless shit.
I've been following their open source releases ever since the first announcement.
Microsoft is really getting on the right track. This makes the future of .Net development even brighter. :)

Those who said .NET has no future are sure looking stupid now. How come its hosted on Github when MS has Codeplex?

Immo Landwerth answered this in a blogpost: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dotnet/archive/2...ource.aspx

We decided to host .NET Core on GitHub because according to Phil Haack, publishing code on GitHub will improve the performance:

"So @ahejlsberg tweets TypeScript 5x faster compiler is on GitHub. I suspect causation. GitHub makes your code 5x faster. Anders says so."

Just kidding.

As a principle, we don’t want to ask the community to come to where we are. Instead, we want to go where the community already is. Based on feedback that many other projects have received it seems the majority of the .NET community is on GitHub.

Don’t believe it? I was skeptical as well so I conducted a little experiment. I moved one of my personal open source projects from CodePlex to GitHub. During the two years it was on CodePlex I’ve only received a single pull request. Five days after I moved to GitHub I already received three pull requests and found two other contributors. This was three months ago. In total, I’ve received 16 pull requests since then, many of them with substantial feature work. (By the way: one of the first ones was around adding unit testing, how awesome is that?). While this is obviously not a representative sample size, it does very much echo what we heard from our customers.

So in order to be where the community is, we decided to host .NET Core on GitHub. A month ago, we already made our samples available on GitHub.
Probably coding some useless shit.

Now that is interesting, MS is finally on the right track with this. I wonder what kind of pulls they'll accept.

Any. There are several one line pulls that make something compatible with X, they'll especially be taking pulls for Linux / Mac development though I would assume.

And ya, ubbe I doubt'd many would post, most here don't really have an interest in WHY or HOW something works (sadly) but I can't blame them, its one of the nicest things about starting with a .net / java language :P

To be honest though, I'm super excited about .net becoming fully cross-platform. That will shut down probably the last remaining thing people can say bad about the language (even though we've had mono for years :p) and it would just be nice to have a full implementation on other systems.
Yeah this is pretty darn awesome. Good job Microsoft, at least one good thing in the past couple of years.
Jesus when will people understand...?
They opensource the .net core framework not the .net framework, thats a difference...

... what. no one said they open sourced the entire framework, and on top of that I don't think you grasp what the .net framework actually is. They open sourced the CLR and class libraries. They have open sourced almost the entire .net framework. What the hell.

And what do you mean the "core framework". You just failed really hard at trying to look above people.

They are also making microframeworks for the raspberry pi and other small pc's
Wow, this is really cool. I wonder if they will be making more open sources through out the future. :D

literally everything .net will be open sourced eventually, so yup! Can't wait to see what all happens with this now :D
