Hackers Remotely Kill a Jeep on the Highway

Video: http://video.wired.com/watch/hackers-wir...-a-highway

Quote:I WAS DRIVING 70 mph on the edge of downtown St. Louis when the exploit began to take hold.

Though I hadn’t touched the dashboard, the vents in the Jeep Cherokee started blasting cold air at the maximum setting, chilling the sweat on my back through the in-seat climate control system. Next the radio switched to the local hip hop station and began blaring Skee-lo at full volume. I spun the control knob left and hit the power button, to no avail. Then the windshield wipers turned on, and wiper fluid blurred the glass.

As I tried to cope with all this, a picture of the two hackers performing these stunts appeared on the car’s digital display: Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, wearing their trademark track suits. A nice touch, I thought.

The Jeep’s strange behavior wasn’t entirely unexpected. I’d come to St. Louis to be Miller and Valasek’s digital crash-test dummy, a willing subject on whom they could test the car-hacking research they’d been doing over the past year. The result of their work was a hacking technique—what the security industry calls a zero-day exploit—that can target Jeep Cherokees and give the attacker wireless control, via the Internet, to any of thousands of vehicles. Their code is an automaker’s nightmare: software that lets hackers send commands through the Jeep’s entertainment system to its dashboard functions, steering, brakes, and transmission, all from a laptop that may be across the country.

To better simulate the experience of driving a vehicle while it’s being hijacked by an invisible, virtual force, Miller and Valasek refused to tell me ahead of time what kinds of attacks they planned to launch from Miller’s laptop in his house 10 miles west. Instead, they merely assured me that they wouldn’t do anything life-threatening. Then they told me to drive the Jeep onto the highway. “Remember, Andy,” Miller had said through my iPhone’s speaker just before I pulled onto the Interstate 64 on-ramp, “no matter what happens, don’t panic.”1

Pretty cool imo

Kinda funny, also kinda sucks for the guy driving lmfao.
Next someone actually gets someone killed and hacking becomes as bad as killing someone. I'll support the death penalty at that point.
Well yeah I mean this is an extremely dangerous tool. If anybody gets there hands on such power its game over. RIP

That's awesome. Technology these days main...

Well not funny one becouse its really dangerous
Kind of impressive to see what technology and hacking tools are evolving to. Let's just hope the "it doesn't fall in the wrong hands" quote works.
Is this that garbage where someone physically taps into the vehicle's PCM to cause havoc? If so, it's nothing new.
I would be impressed if someone is able to "hack" into a car without having to tap into vehicle's wiring.
Good. Hope that fucker Jeep driver crashed and died on impact. The other day I was driving in a rush and a Jeep driver and I arrive at the Stop sign at the same time, we both made left turns and I had to change my fucking direction so that fucktard in his shitty cheap American engineering car did not hit my superior car. Then the faggot honked at me. I hate Jeep drivers.
Peak Lounge Graveyard - RIP: futana, trisomy 21, clark, grin
This isn't possible, its only possible when you implant something in a car, how tf would they connect to a car?

"cheap American engineering", it is cheap and simple engineering but is that really an insult? It's a characteristic of the vehicle. Solid body frame, same design as Jeeps have been for ages just merely modified.

"Hope that fucker Jeep driver crashed and died on impact". What the fuck is wrong with you? You wish ill on someone because they drive a jeep.

Seems like this was entirely your fault and his fault. You both arrived the stop sign at the same time and both had to turn left. You willingly turned left.

"Superior car", kek. A jeep is good at what it does, it's a fucking jeep, an off-road all terrain vehicle. What makes your car "superior"? For the sake of argument, A VW is good at what it does; an economical sedan with good mileage.

'but muh suprior car.'

Exactly what i thought when i read his comment.

Cool but extremely dangerous for new cars that have internet connection based engines, brakes and other systems in car 😯
Lmfao, I'd laugh so hard if this became a big thing.
Lol thats sick, but scary at the same time.
