Interview - Sam Winchester
Justin Timberlake: Welcome to this week's edition of the HF News! Today I'm here with Sam Winchester, the newest addition to staff. How are you doing?
Sam Winchester: I am doing great, thanks for asking! Currently sitting on my chair and having a nice cup of tea.
Justin Timberlake: Sounds refreshing! Are there any shoutouts you'd like to make?
Sam Winchester: Shoutout to the members Tatux & Trolhi, who are my close and personal friends.
Justin Timberlake: Nice. So how did you feel when you were appointed to staff? Did you see it coming?
Sam Winchester: To be honest, I had absolutely no idea. As you might guess I was really shocked, in a good way of course.
Justin Timberlake: A nice little surprise to wake up to. Is it hard getting adjusted to everything?
Sam Winchester: It hasn't been too hard for me. Yesterday, when I was promoted, I spent the whole evening reading Help Docs & staff instructions. Now that I am an official HF Staff member, I am no longer just a member here, I represent the site. So I'm going to be as devoted as I possibly can.
Justin Timberlake: And now you'll have members looking up to you as well. Are you looking forward to being able to use the warning button?
Sam Winchester: I am going to be giving out warnings as it is my duty now, but I will give them politely. After all, the idea behind them is not to punish, but to educate instead.
Justin Timberlake: Well said, I'll try not to earn too many. Moving on, how did you come across HF in the first place?
Sam Winchester: I registered in 2012 and I believe I got here through a YouTube video. I've always been fond of hackers, so I wanted to become one myself. The things that made me actually start browsing the site often were RATs and booters. I'm sure you and many others can relate to that.
Justin Timberlake: Yeah that tends to be the starting point for quite a lot of members. What made you stay here after joining?
Sam Winchester: I can remember the day I discovered the marketplace and what cool things people were selling there. I then started browsing the marketplace frequently and discovered other sections too, like Lounge & Gaming section. Last year I found out there was a LoL section, and that is what made me fall in love with the site. I was so excited I PM'd Omni saying that HF has become the main reasons I use the internet. He told me that he's glad that I enjoy HF so much.
Justin Timberlake: And that resulted in you being the first recipient of the Legend award! Did you ever sell any products or services in the marketplace?
Sam Winchester: Yes I have. I've sold League of Legends skin codes when they were still active. I've done some currency exchanging and even sold a couple of ebooks. It's been a while since I have used the marketplace, though.
Justin Timberlake: There are tons of cool things being sold in the marketplace right now, so many options to choose from. Moving on, what do you do outside of HF?
Sam Winchester: I've been swimming for 9 years now and I love going to the gym. Oh, and you can probably tell that I play League of Legends and games in general. On top of that I enjoy riding mopeds and motorcycles.
Justin Timberlake: Wow, that's some serious dedication. Anyway that's all the time we have, is there anything else you'd like to say before we conclude this interview?
Sam Winchester: Yes. I hope that once I get off probation I'll be able to continue moderating on HF. It has only been two days but I'm already loving the job. Oh and the entire HF News team has my sincerest appreciation, what you guys are doing is amazing. Keep it up!

Darkode Takedown
For many months, the forum Darkode, run by sp3c, has been one of the few well-known hacker underground sites. With its high-price buy in and invitation-only design, only the elite were allowed access. Within the forum, thousands of hackers and 'security professionals' bought and sold stolen credit card data, access to botnets, 0-day exploits, and other nefarious data. The infamous forum has since been taken down by the American Federal Bureau of Investigation. Dozens, if not hundreds, of the forum's users have been charged or convicted of computer crimes, fraud, conspiracy, and a myriad of legal infractions and felonies. Many of the members' stories, including the well-known hacker and loveable troll KMS, are being followed by the media, and are hopefullly going to learn from their mistakes and become law-abiding citizens.
Four Million Victim Malware Botnet
Three Estonian men, Timur Gerassimenko (age 35, 4-year sentence), Dmitiri Jegorov (age 37, 44 month sentence), and Konstantin Poltev (age 31, 40 month sentence) are charged with spreading malware that has infected over four million computers spanning more than 100 countries. They are ordered to forfeit $4.5 million in repercussions due to the extent to which their malware has damaged computers, even government-run ones. The malware, simply enough, created web requests to various advertisements run by the attackers, driving up revenue. The $4.5 million pales in comparison to the $14.3 million earned by this massive scam. Of the four million machines, roughly 500,000 of them were located in the US, and included computers belonging to US government agencies, namely NASA. The malware prevented the execution and installation of AntiVirus software, thus opening them up to further attacks and less complex pieces of malware, leading to over $65,000 worth in damages of NASA machines.
Incredibly Simple Mac OSX Root
In Mac OSX Yosemite, version 10.10, a new environment variable called DYLD_PRINT_TO_FILE was introduced. This allows the user to choose where he or she would like error messages to be installed. However, this can be easily leveraged by creating an error identical to a sudoers entry, and setting the error file to that of /etc/sudoers, an unprivileged user can add him or herself to the sudoers file, allowing them to easily gain access to the root user. In the current Beta release for El Capitan (OS X 10.11), the vulnerability has already been patched. However, current stable releases of OS 10.10 are still vulnerable. The program leverages a root-owned setuid application called newgrp, and can be performed with the following commands: - echo "echo '$(whoami) ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL' >&3" | DYLD_PRINT_TO_FILE=/etc/sudoers newgrp && sudo -s

1.4 Million Cars Recalled by Fiat Chrysler After Software Bug is Revealed
A few days after Fiat Chrysler patched a bug and reassured owners that the attack that was used to shut down the transmission and other systems remotely on a Jeep was not an enormous risk, the company has announced that it is recalling almost 1.5 million vehicles in response to the bug that was discovered. The recall is after researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek discovered the vulnerability in the car. The two researchers spent nearly a year researching the vehicle before discovering the vulnerability in the Uconnect computer included in some Fiat Chrysler vehicles sold within the United States. By exploiting the vulnerability, one is able to move laterally to a separate chip and could soon issue remote commands to the vehicle to take over many of Jeep's systems. Fiat Chrysler issued a software patch to fix the Uconnect issue a few days before the research was revealed to the public. Despite the patch, Fiat Chrysler has decided to recall the affected vehicles, which include Jeep Cherokees, Grand Cherokees, Doge Vipers, Dodge Challengers, and several other models. “The security of FCA US customers is a top priority, as is retaining their confidence in the Company’s products,” Fiat Chrysler said in a press release, according to CNBC. “Accordingly, FCA US has established a dedicated System Quality Engineering team focused on identifying and implementing best practices for software development and integration.” Earlier in the week, the company spokesman downplayed the risks of the vulnerability disclosed. The company says that it is unaware of any real-world instances where the attack was used to illegally control a CFA vehicle. >>Source
WordPress Patches Critical XSS Vulernability in All Builds
WordPress released a new version of its content management service (CMS) that addressed a very serious cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability that could lead to site compromises. According to Gary Pendergast, an engineer at Automatc, WorPres's parent company, the XSS vulnerability could be exploited by any users marked as a contributor or author on the site. However, specifics have not been revealed or published. The company warns users that sites could be completely hijacked and that site owners should update to the newest patch as soon as possible. The latest release also patches 20 bugs from version 4.2 of the CMS platform. Two other developers of popular WordPress plugins announced this week that they addressed vulnerabilities in their products earlier this month. The vulnerabilities would open the websites running the plugins to arbitrary code execution, the theft of sensitive information, or even a total compromise. Researchers at the High-Tech Bridge security firm in Switzerland discovered and revealed a collection of CSS and SQL vulnerabilities and disclosed them on Wednesday. The SQL bug existed in a plugin by the name of Count Per Day. The issue stems from insufficient filtration of input days, which could allow an attacker to inject and execute arbitrary SQL commands within the application's database. The second issue found by High-Tech Bridge was in a plugin called Paid memberships Pro, a plugin that helped web developers restrict access to some pages, the plugin, with over 40,000 days, suffered from a series of XSS vulnerabilities. >>Source
New Zero-Day Acquisition Firm Zerodium Launched By VUPEN Found
In the weeks since the Hacking Team breach, the spotlight has shone squarely on the small and often shadowy companies that are in the business of buying and selling exploits and vulnerabilities. Such a company by the name of Netagrad decided this week to retreat from the industry after its dealings with the hacking Team were revealed. However, there's a new entrant in the field, Zerodium, and there are some familiar names behind it. The company is being lead by Chaouki Bekrar, founded of VUPEN, a vulnerability and exploit broker that is frequently the center of discussions about the legality and ethics of such businesses. VUPEN is one of the uncommon companies in the field that does all of its own research and development and does not buy any vulnerabilities or exploits from an outside source. However, in light of the recent focus from lawmakers, media and governments, Bekrar has created a new venture that will wade fully into the purchase of bugs and exploits. Zerodium plans to focus solely on buying high-risk vulnerabilities and leaving aside the lower end of the spectrum of vulnerabilities. “ZERODIUM pays premium rewards to security researchers to acquire their zero-day discoveries and exploits affecting widely used operating systems, software, and/or devices. While the majority of existing bug bounty programs may accept almost any kind of vulnerabilities and PoCs but pay low rewards, at ZERODIUM we only focus on high-risk vulnerabilities with fully functional and reliable exploits, and we pay higher rewards,” the company’s site says. Zerodium will look for vulnerabilities in Windows, OS X, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office, Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and the major web and mail services, >>Source

Xbox One User-Interface Changes Incoming
The slowness and inconvenience of the Xbox One user-interface has been one of the main grievances of players since the console’s release. Xbox One platform manager Richard Irving revealed the plans for the increased speed of navigation on the console along with its intended release, which is this upcoming fall. This is what he had to say regarding the update: “Our design point of the new Xbox experience is speed and making all of the things you do on Xbox Live, both in and out of the game much faster. What is familiar is that the user can go left and right through the categories, but we have added a vertical scroll element that takes you deeper within the category.” In his interview with GamingBolt Irving goes into detail regarding pins, Game Hubs, and the Trending area. While there are a number of other changes that are expected to come with the update, Irving puts emphasis on the increased speed and performance of the Xbox One’s user-interface following the update coming this fall. >>Source

Grooveshark Co-Founder Found Dead in Home
Music streaming website Grooveshark’s co-founder, Josh Greenberg, was announced dead this week by his girlfriend, who found him dead in his bed. An autopsy has revealed that there wasn’t any explainable cause of death, although one may be found after a toxicology test. Greenberg was 28 years of age at the time of death. He founded Grooveshark as a University of Florida freshman when nearly ten years ago in March 2006. “He was excited about potential new things that he was going to start,” his girlfriend said. >>Source
Dell Designs Military-Spec Tablet
If you’re someone who lives life on the edge, Dell has designed the perfect tablet for your lifestyle. Their tablet line, appropriately named the “Rugged Series” has a new guest that goes by the name “Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet”, and he’s here to stay. According to Dell, the tablet is "designed for performance and reliability in the harshest conditions," – they definitely weren’t lying. The ironman device can handle devastating temperatures from -20 degrees all the way to 145 degrees Fahrenheit, it can handle harsh drops, and general debris. They also claim the tablet is “ideal for the military, emergency response crews, industrial work and adventuring”. Luckily, it won’t lack spec wise either. The Latitude 12 is flaunting a 5th-gen Intel i3 CPU, 4 GB, 12 hours of battery life, Windows 8.1, and a whopping 512 GB solid state drive. With power comes price, and this category isn’t slouching either: the hefty price tag will set you back $3,649 plus tax for the highest end specs, or $1600 for the base model. If you’re a professional in a line of work where power, reliability, and durability is key, this tablet may just be worth it the buy >>Source
Twitch Leaving Flash in the Dust, Adopting HTML5 Baby
With web browsers such as Firefox and Google Chrome calling for the end of Adobe Flash, Twitch has also decided to hop onboard the HTML5 train. The Amazon conglomerate claims the transition won’t be a quick one, but instead will take a bit of time to roll out in full. According to Twitch, they’ve currently redesigned half of the video player already to work solely on HTML5. They must also redesign the video itself above the controls. Twitch also mentions that “You’ll begin to see the new player on channel pages first.” >>Source

Colombia Mass Grave Dig Begins
A dig begins in Colombia as forensics have identified a possible site to where a mass grave could possibly be located, an Escombrera rubbish dump on the outskirts of Medellin. The grave is estimated to have bodies of 90-300 people within it and is thought to be the biggest urban mass grave in the world. Relatives of the possible victims held a memorial service at the landfill the day before the dig. The main victims appear to be left-wing rebels who disappeared in 2002 when the current Colombia president, Alvaro Uribe, ordered an operation with the army to subdue the rebels. Criminal gangs are also accused of involvement in some of the disappearances. An estimated 200,000 people have been killed since hostilities between the army and Colombia's main rebel group, the Farc, began in 1964. >>Source
Siege In India Leaves Three Dead
Ten people have died in the Indian state of Punjab after a siege at a police station was brought to an end by security forces. All three of the attackers were killed and a further seven were murdered including the Punjab state police superintendent. The attackers first hijacked a car and then opened fired at a bus station before then entering the police station in Gurdaspur district. Police believe that the attackers are from Indian-administered Kashmir. "The operation to flush out attackers is over. All three attackers have been killed" Gurdaspur Police Chief Salwinder Singh has said. Attacks such as this are quite common in neighbouring Kushmir but attacks such as this are very rare in Punjab. >>Source
Australia's Jehovah's Witnesses Failed To Report Over 1,000 Alleged Abuse
The Jehovah's Witnesses Church in Australia failed to report over 1,000 child sex abusers to the police, an inquiry has heard. Instead of reporting these cases the church decided to handle the cases themselves - some of which dated back to the 1950s. One elder told the hearing that important documents relating to the cases were destroyed so they would not be discovered. Australia began a national inquiry into child sexual abuse in 2013, after claims of abuse in the Catholic Church. One Church member, who only identified as BCB, gave a testimony to the commission alleging she was abused as a teenager by an elder and suffered depression as a result. "The abuse changed who I was," she said. "It destroyed my confidence and my self esteem." Currently the case continues as more victims come forward and testimonies are heard. >>Source
