Hmm, you could try Golden Time if you liked Toradora!. It's made by the same guys if I remember correctly.
When I started getting into anime I watched Death Note, it's a little dark and well, incredibly awesome.
I don't know, I'm not a guru on the genre yet so I can't recommend the best ones based on what you watched but those are my current top kek suggestions.

I thought action was what you were looking for although my taste is a little bit dark maybe try ~

1. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (Good popular anime, similar taste in action genre)
2. Akame Ga Kill (Action, little romance, 18+ violence probably)
3. Ao No Excorcist ( Pretty good demon anime, lots of action)
4. Code Geass (Psychological action, but mech so depends if you like that sort of stuff)
5. Deadman Wonderland (Short violent and action packed)
6. Hunter x Hunter (Long comedy, action genre)
7. Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (School life action romance)
8. Sekirei ( Like highschool DxD - Demons)
9. Strike the blood (Action romance vampire thing)
10. Zankyou no terror (Terrorist Action romance, great OST).

Hopefully that gives you enough to look through, especially with HxH being 147 episodes,

Well, I did not really like the gory part of it. I only watched it because a friend of mine forced me but I liked season 2. At the end it was pretty nice. I like Anime that has like a guy who is really skilled and is aimed to protect his friends? Kinda? All the Anime I watched have the same thing.
