Shokugeki no Souma is a Disaster

Shokugeki no Souma is honestly fantastic, the story is great, the art is high quality, the characters are all well done, there is actually noticeable character progression, and it's just all around fun to watch. This is an anime I look forward to watching every week despite not watching too much anime anymore.

So why is it a disaster? Purely because this is a perfect gateway anime that is ruined with ecchi. Don't get me wrong the ecchi to a seasoned anime viewer is fine, sometimes it goes over the top sure, but it's definitely not something people who dislike ecchi will avoid, however, people who have never watched anime before will be completely off put which is a damn shame because this should be the Initial D of food shows, where people who have zero interest in the anime world will watch it just because it's about cars, people who enjoy cooking or food shows should absolutely love this, but because of the animated sexual theme this will never be the case. Now, I know this wasn't made for anyone outside of Japan where this isn't seen as ludicrous however, I think if they thought about it logically they could have made a much larger profit if they also attempted to market it to westerners. This would have been an amazing show to air on Toonami, hell even to air on the Food Network if it wasn't plagued with such content.

The manga however can be as ecchi as it want's, no peasant is going to read the manga.

tl;dr: Shokugeki no Souma is a beautiful anime that has the potential to be broadcasted all over the world but because of it's sexual themes western media and the western mentality will never accept it.
I've only heard good things about the manga though.

But yeah, I get your point on the ecchi things. About time anime should scrap it, at least on titles that are doing well.

Not so much scrap it as better placement.
Never been to Japan and all but just from seeing pictures I think they hit a larger demographic adding ecchi :P

Is ecchi the part where it gets a bit overly sexual when they eat the food?

Because I completely agree with this post, and I'm one of those people who were caught off guard lol.

I like the story, but the part where they have overly dramatic orgasms over the food is just a bit wtf.

It's does but this is such a quality anime it shouldn't need ecchi to make it more popular.
I'm pretty sure they don't really think, or care about getting the show aired outside Japan.
Also, the ecchi-ness is just a small part of the anime imo, so who cares.
I guess you could say, it "spices" the anime up. hue

PS - the manga is good.
I really felt that the ecchi moments were unnecessary, my literal first thoughts while watching the first episode was "What the heck, this show don't need this ecchi shit yo" Maybe the writer didn't have any other way of showing how good the food is or some shit. It felt out of place at least, would have been better off without it in my opinion. The average 12yo anime viewer is gonna disagree though 🎉

There are other anime/manga in this niche, Shokugeki no Souma isn't special in that regard.

Sure its the first to be made in recent years and benefits from better production due to that but its hardly a unique little snowflake.

For example give Chūka Ichiban!(Cooking Master Boy), or Yakitate!! Japan a look. The first is super old but brilliant and the second is similar to Shokugeki no Souma in that what they create tends to have OTT reactions. (non-ecchi)

You can also follow the recipes from both of those and actually create something real, Shokugeki no Souma has a habit of focusing on one or two ingredients and glossing over the rest of the process which I find frustrating.
I remember making a thread about how fucking stupid it is, but it became really dear to me and the ecchi scenes decreased..
The anime is very good, I can tolerate that much ecchi if a show was as good as Shokugeki no Souma <3

Eh wait fuck. Why did they have to do that :/
This really sucks, I feel like recommending it to my sis and friends but it's just disgusting.
Still doesn't change the fact that the anime is amazing, but man they went a bif too far at the last ep.
I feel like no matter how good a show is, some people will always find something wrong with it.
Does anyone have an idea or think that this anime will get a second season?
I really dislike how they had to end it T_T

I agree but not every anime is a disaster.
I agree, the sexual themes are what kind of turned me away from it, I still think the anime is 9-10/10 worthy, I feel the main problem was it got kind of slow towards the final episodes of the first season ( I believe they are making a season 2 because it didnt end where the manga is at)

I've never really seen ecchi as that big of a deal. I've been watching ecchi anime since I was a kid, I think the first one I saw was Chobits and then Air Gear. Didn't bother me then, doesn't bother me now.
