MariaDB

We are now on MariaDB. I made the decision to go with MariaDB after reviewing the performance of MySQL 5.6 since moving to the new servers. It was reasonable but CPU imho was a bit high. I knew I could always move to MariaDB and I decided two days ago to perform the move today and see how it goes.

I also did a lot of research and reading about MariaDB. Not a lot of the features we'll use and MyBB doesn't have any extra compatibility. But the fact that MariaDB is a drop-in replacement might end with MariaDB 11. I read that from the actual MariaDB dev team. So with that in mind I decided to make the adjustment now instead of waiting till I was required to make a more complicated upgrade.

So far the CPU went from a near 100% of a single CPU cycle to only 5% or less. That's incredibly significant in terms of performance. Overall server load has gone from 60-70% CPU idle to 85-90% CPU idle. This gives us a lot more room when it comes to CPU cycles and what freedom I have to add features to HF. There does seem to be extra RAM used but fortunately we have plenty of that on the DB server.

The next maintenance upgrade will be to Nginx for some additional DDOS protection features I plan to implement.

Thanks to all members for being patient while I performed the upgrade. Much appreciated. Enjoy.
Awesome keep up the great work!
Nice that it got implemented.
Good work Omni, a positive change for sure

Oh nice, I've never used it on anything of scale, but have heard good things about it. That's an incredible resource drop.
Awesome to hear, good job!

It is. The funny thing is that on TOP command the MySQL (MariaDB) process goes idle constantly. In TOP I like to only view active processes and mysql keeps vanishing. Leads me to believe that MariaDB takes huge advantage of RAM and CACHE.
Awesome great work and a huge drop in CPU temp
I'm curious, why has it been so hit and miss with lag the past two days? Has Hf been under attack or was that you making changes?
Only use HF to deal.
Nice job. Any ETA on the revival of the old theme?
As always thank you for the constant updates Omni.

Attack. We've had 140 million page requests in the past 12 hours. No worries though. It's mitigated and after my next change these attacks will never bother us again. I look forward to whatever new attack someone will come up with.

No. Because I have to do the Nginx changes first. Then I have to upgrade us to MyBB 1.8. Then I have to fix everything that breaks after the upgrade. And then, after that, I can work on the theme. Likely immediately after the upgrade I'll do some minor theme changes from default MyBB like changing text and background colors. But I'll worry about deeper theme changes after I'm 100% sure site features and plugins are working properly.

The MyBB upgrade is without doubt going to be very time-consuming and complicated with the possibility of a buttload of problems. Example is simply running the upgrade script from MyBB might choke the server or the scripts could timeout. Table changes may run for hours and that's not an overestimation. So much can go very very wrong. I can't wait till it's all over and I can breathe a sigh of relief.
Good work Omni, the site has been running amazing since the upgrade. Keep it going and don't work too much, you deserve some breaks too.

You know, I always find it amazing how you manage all of that. It really must be a pain in the ass to deal with. I don't seem to really think about how smooth HF is always running, but it's really all thanks to you. Thanks for always putting a lot of work for HF.
Omniscient is on fire. System administration is a hard job, and pays damn well as a career. Great work.
