Go-Pro Timelapse Tutorial

This section is not very active and I am going to try and throw some content in. I am going to make this as in depth as I can without making it confusing. Like always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Equipment Needed

  • A GoPro. I am using the Hero 3 Black Edition for this tutorial.

  • A Tripod (Optional but, Helpful)

  • Portable USB Charger (Depending on length of lapse)

  • A Large MicroSD Card 32-64 Gb

  • GoPro Studio (Found on GoPro's Website)

  • Time

GoPro Settings

Before we start setting up for the shoot, you want to make sure your settings are properly set. When you first turn on your GoPro you should be here... Spoiler (Click to View)

Next, you are going to want to click the power button 4 times until you get the the settings screen. Will be a picture of a wrench. Hit the top button, then hit the power button 4 times until you get to this screen. Spoiler (Click to View)

Now, Depending on how long your time lapse is going to be you are going to want to pick the correct shot per second. The options are .5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30, and 60. Spoiler (Click to View) I do not recommend doing .5, 1, 2, as they will take up a TON of space on your card. These are good for short lapses of maybe 1-5 minutes. When I do a time-lapse over 30 minuets I use either 10 or 30. If i'm doing multiple hour time-lapses I will use 60 seconds. You can play around with different settings and see what is best for you. So now you can select the time you like by scrolling down by pressing the power button and selecting by pressing the top button. You can now exit the settings and scroll back over to the time-lapse screen to get read for the shoot.

Time for the shoot.
Now that your settings are ready, you want to find a nice location to set up your GoPro and Tripod if you are using one. Personally, I do not have an adapter to hook onto my GoPro so, I just take the case off my GoPro and set it up on a bench or ledge. Also, I do not recommend shooting with the full GoPro case on, It sometimes can decrease quality of the shots. Just buy a GoPro skeleton and you can still mount on any of the adapters and it has open ports to plug your USB in if you are using a portable power station for longer shots. Now time for patients. Set up your GoPro and hit the top button to begin the lapse. If you want to make sure its going, look at the number of shots left on your card and it should be going up. After your lapse is done, hit the top button again to stop it.

Good Places to do Time-lapses.
  • The Beach

  • Your Roof

  • The Sky with Clouds. Make sure the sun isnt pointing directly into the lens.

  • Rivers

  • Roadways

Putting everything together.
Now you should be ready to put all the pictures together in a slide show type form so it looks like a video. There are different programs you can do this with but, for the sake of this tutorial I will be using GoPro Studio. (Free by GoPro). Go ahead and plug in your MicroSD or SD card into your computer and upload the files into a folder on your Desktop. Easier to access and find. After you have uploaded all of your pictures into this folder you can open up GoPro Studio. Load it into go pro studio render it, then pick the speed you find suitable.

Export and done!
I have a gopro as well and this is some good information. Time Lapses are always a cool thing to do.
I like the beach suggestion as Water movement in time lapses looks really cool.
