So I've got a fairly simple idea. Basically where I live is a major tourist destination (Myrtle Beach) but what most people don't realize is that we have a major homeless population. The city itself has disgusting policies that in the end result in forcing these people out instead of helping them.

Well instead of bitching about how my town doesn't handle this right I want to help. Major issue is as always MONEY! On the route to work and the route to school I take every day there are always 2-4 different people on the corner asking for money. If I had the cash to just give away I would, and I can't afford to give them all rides. However I'm tired of driving by day after day avoiding eye-contact and feeling shameful for wanting them to get help, but not offering any myself. So to sum the whole thing up I've gotten the idea for socks! This is something that nobody considers, but is a basic need for anybody who wears shoes. Even when I'm wearing shoes I wear holes in my socks all the time! So I'm planning on buying a few dozen packages at walmart or some other discount store and keeping them in my car to hand out when I come to the street corner and see these people who have nothing asking for anything I can spare.

What do you guys think?

tl;dr - I buy socks to hand out to the homeless on the corners instead of feeling bad that I can't afford to give them money. Socks are cheap in bulk and I can give them out to everyone!

I like this idea. It provides sustenance to their lives with no risk of supporting a habit, and it's a cheap method.

I'm sure I'd appreciate this gesture if someone did it for me in this situation.

Or simply buy some food, and make sack lunches. Socks will be back to square one after they foot them around in the same shoes.

Where I live the Homeless will laugh at you for giving them money. I speak from personal experience of not only my own, but stories of old and current friends that were once homeless.

They laugh because they just go and spend it on drugs. They live a life where drugs rule everything around them.

This obviously isn't the de facto situation, as there will always be abnormalities or anomalies in any group, but it was ~75% of the people I met that were panhandling were doing it for drugs in my personal trial.


I suggest giving them food. Anything helps, especially pre-cut Bagels. They come in packs of 8, give 2 to a single person or 4 for two. The Bread will keep them from the hunger pains, and if it has Blueberries or Bananas in it, can provide further nutritional benefits. If anyone has given them some spread, they can apply it on the Bagel, such as peanut butter - Or go to a local sub-shop and ask for some spread.

If they're dedicated they'll barter anything for drugs, but at least you know you've given them something other than money.

Thanks for the support and ideas! Any ideas for good cheap non-perishable foods? Fast food works, but I want to be able to give them something on an as seen basis, and it's kinda hard to keep burgers on me all the time. Bagels are a great idea!

Also to address the foot questions, I go through socks pretty quick so I imagine an extra pair would mean a lot more to someone in that situation who walks probably x10 more than me.

That's a good idea, unfortunately the woods in the area that they tend to live in isn't a very long term situation for them. Police and idiots tend to go through and force them out on a regular basis.

When the idea gets a bit more organized I might setup a donation system and keep an update of what things are being purchased and what's being given out so people don't feel like I'm just stealin the money. For now though I think I'll just finance it myself.

Just from my perspective here I think you'll be wasting your time, money and effort.

Usually cities like Myrtle Beach start campaigns against the homeless because they're huge tourist destinations and they all come to simply take advantage of the city and drive the value and profit of local businesses down with their begging and atmosphere.

Not to sound inhumane, but I've found that most homeless are homeless because of choice and purposely prey upon the good natures of people who immediately imply assumptions and pity them, many are con-artist and drug addicts sad to say and while your good gestures may be accepted, they won't truly help anyone in the way that you wish, they'll still beg and bother people and you might even encourage them to get more aggressive with their begging.

If you truly have a desire to help the homeless, don't pay the panhandlers on the corners any attention, go to local shelters and soup kitchens and volunteer your time and spare clothing, it takes a great deal of humility and personal shame to visit those places because of how they are represented and your good gestures will be more appreciated and impactful there, not that you want to be appreciated, but you certainly will.

It's good to want to help people, but help the right ones who need it, not the ones who take advantage of it.
