Hi guys,
I need your judgment on a problem that is screwing me over for a number of days now, that being that my virtual machine platform, the OS I downloaded for it and my CPU in my laptop are having a proverbial "argument" and refusing to work together. It really pisses me off because the method im trying is from a book, and I cant find help or anything anywhere at all, be it on help services or whatnot. However, i will try to include all the info you need to diagnose my problem if you know anything about my problem.
Basically, I have a 64-bit operating system on my Windows-10 installed Laptop (ik that many of you hate on windows10, but my experience with it has been nothing but positive :)). Earlier last week I downloaded Oracle VM VirtualBox to run Debian Linux on and perform multiple different wifi hacks and tests from my laptop. I downloaded the latest version, v.5.0.22 from their site:
and I also downloaded the extension pack. Moreover, I downloaded the latest 64-bit version of Ubuntu Linux to use on the platform (v.16.04):
However, whenever I open up the wizard in VirtualBox, there is never an option to host 64-bit OS's in the GUI when creating a new machine, there are many options to assign different OS's, but they are all for 32 bit systems. What is even worse is that on all the different sites I looked to download VirtualBox, there is only ever a "Mixed Package" download for both 32/64 bit systems, which means that I cant ever specify which I need. At the moment it seems like my computer is only ever downloading the 32 bit version for older CPUs, even though my system is clearly 64 bit. It might be something to do with the fact that its a mobile processor, a 6700HQ to be precise. In my book, from which I am taking these actions from, "Hacking Wireless Networks - The Ultimate Hands-on Guide", it all works seamlessly, and on his example supports 64-bit systems. Remember, I downloaded the exact same platform that he did from the same URL.
However, while my system does not seem to accept the 64-bit version of VirtualBox, it downloaded the 64/bit Ubuntu OS onto my HDD flawlessly.
So now im trying to link a Virtual Machine designed to accept Ubuntu-32/bit to an OS on a virtual disc drive, Ubuntu-64.
Even if none of this makes sense, I will still give you the error message which is always displayed in the window when I try to boot up the VM:
This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU.
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
Clearly this is bullshit, I have a 64/bit system and downloaded the 64/bit Ubuntu Linux OS, the only thing not going to plan is that the settings menu for the virtual machine im trying to set up only contains Ubuntu-32, not Ubuntu-64.
PLEASE SOMEONE, IF YOU CAN GIVE ANY ADVICE WHATSOEVER IT WOULD BE IMMENSELY APPRECIATED; I AM STILL A NOVICE BUT IF I CANT GET PAST THIS MY ENTIRE EFFORTS WILL BE FOR NOTHING!
so yeah please help :D
