I'm doing a little project where I take in-game screenshots and manipulate the image through Photoshop, adding effects, compositing etc. What I want to do is to obtain the highest possible quality screenshots in order to have a more "professional" workflow. With Dxtory I am able to print screen 1920x1080 lossless PNG images which is fine, but I was wondering what if I set the game at 4K? Would that get me a 3840×2160 image or is the resolution limited to what my monitor displays?
The game I'm talking about is Black Desert Online and it has a photo mode for making poses with the characters and hiding all the player menus. I'm getting the GTX 980 Ti GPU soon and I believe it won't be a problem driving the game at 4K (it will be temporary, just to take the screenshots), but if I can't use this method on my 1080p monitor, is there any other way?

But I'd be amazed if it's possible, never seen anything that could do that tho.
Good luck working this out
That's what I thought too. I wonder if there's a software program that can communicate with the graphics API and bypass this problem. I mean, if the game can run at 4K even my monitor is 1080p and I just see a bit more sharpness, wouldn't a said program by able to extract that exact 4K information?

Well, I did a bit more research and apparently what I'm asking is possible. According to this reddit thread, with Dynamic Super Resolution you can set the game to run at 4K even if your monitor is of lower resolution and then take screenshots: https://www.reddit.com/r/GlobalOffensive...p_monitor/
I'm just wondering how hard is this for the GPU. Do you think I could be alright with the GTX 980 Ti?
The 980ti should be good enough to run the game for a screenshot. What game is it? That will have a huge roll in the resolution and quality you run things, however the 980ti is a high end card, I don't believe that you will have issues.

It is for Black Desert Online. I don't care about high FPS for 4K. I will be playing the game at 1080p and switch to 4K only when I will want to take the highest quality screenshots.

I don't know if this is the Nvidia DSR filter. This official video below came out just a few months after the one you posted.
I'm a bit worried about the monitor issues mentioned in the first video though. Don't you think that by now the could have at least "ironed" out the possibility of damaging your display?

Sorry for double posting.
I'm updating the thread because I just read about Nvidia ANSEL which essentially is, exactly what I am looking for. The only problem is that I'm not sure if it will be supported by any game or specific ones, like Witcher 3.
If it does not support Black Desert Online, I guess I'll have to use DSR to get my screenshots.

You can, I have a 1080p monitor and I used to take 4k screen from CS:GO
I have an Nvidia card, so all I did was go to the nvidia control panel, crank the resolution to 200%.
You can actually see a tiny bit of difference (Maybe due to antialiasing, I'm note sure) But when you take a screenshot it will be (if your capturing program allows it) in 4k.

Thanks, I already found about that. I'm actually searching for a bit more elegant solution but until there's ANSEL support for Black Desert Online, I'll be either doing this or supersampling using GeDoSaTo.
