Notice: I haven't tested this extensively, I am only going off of a few minutes of vehicle travel.

This is pretty simple, all you have to do is put your location settings on 'battery saving'. What does this mode do?

"Battery saving: Battery saving mode estimates your location using low battery-intensive location sources, such as Wi-Fi and cellular networks. It uses Google's location service to help estimate your location faster and more accurately."

When you have this enabled and are in the game, your character will be wandering off in different places as you move. You can slowly walk around and accrue more steps/distance because the character runs in different directions and then returns back to your real one. This can also be used to reach gyms and PokeStops.

Hmm this is an interesting idea. Lowering the accuracy of the GPS to make your character move more. I wonder if it works.
