Thoughts & Advice on my Wordpress Blog Theme

o I’ve been working on a football(soccer) WordPress theme and i’m at a stage where i’m starting to like what i have but well my opinion is a tad bias.

So… What do you guys think? And how can i improve what i already have?

FYI the background is just for show at the minute, need to work up my own one but that’s the sort of thing i’m going to have.
Move the social icons. Don't mix them with your content, have them in your footer (if you decide to have one) or put them in the articles page (the page you visit for each article.

I'd suggest having your navigation at the top. From experience i only liked side navs with full width pages. Pages that just float in the center of the browser with an empty top section is aweful

Also i'm not sure if you placed those ads there by yourself? But if you did, remove them, you don't want a random ad placed in between your content. At first i thought it was another article that had its sizes wrong.

The search bar also looks weird, normally the search box would be inside the navigation somewhere.

Also you need to use headers, let the viewer know what their looking at. "Latest news", "Related news"

Best advice i can give is, look up other news article pages, see what makes their page stand out and try do something similar.

It definitely is a great start tho. Not sure if you already did or not, but do mock ups before building. Its faster and easier to see what looks right and wrong

Thanks for your opinions, some of which i agree with some i dont. The space at the top is simply because i havent dont a logo/header yet. As for the search bar i put it there as it gives the site a more unique look. Pulling away from just a standard block.

I will remove the ad in the middle though and look at adding content headers(having trouble making on the fits my flat design though).

Thanks again.

If you are doing a logo and a header, What will be in it? You should only add content that has usefulness. So if you are going to add a header, i don't suggest just having the logo in it, which relates back to my other point, maybe placing the navigation and search box inside the header.

For the search box, idk maybe its just because its against such an empty background. If you want to Pull away from just a standard block, you need to do some really good background work to make sure the page doesn't look like its floating, especially if you're going for a flat look
Nah im not changing the navigation, like the search bar it helps break the design up from being a standalone block. for the logo im going to see if i can incorporate it into the background so its not just floating there
Maybe have a more targeted advert that blends in better with your website.

The one currently sticks out like a sore thumb.
Wouldn't waste valuable real estate with search box up top like that imho - Nav at the top or right side works better we've found. LIke was said above, check out top 3 competitors and imitate success. They've probably tested and found what's most successful and gives them the best results.

Ad placement is key and I'd adjust yours a tad if I were you. Overall, like it a lot.
