Q - Learn Serbian Or Russian first (the basics, much differences/similarities?)

Guys, I am looking to invest time into learning a Slavic language.

I am potentially looking to move to Serbia in around 6 months, for how long I am not sure, potentially a few months to a year.

Basically, 8.6million speakers (Serbian) versus 260 million Russian speakers. I equally am fond of both cultures and in the future will visit/work in both.

I feel Russian will be of more use in the long term, but I need to decide which one to learn first - due to the fact I go to Serbia soon. Should I just focus on Serbian even though it's far less applicable than Russian?

Any native Russians/Serbians/linguists could offer some advice would be much appreciated.
From what I heard most people are learning English so I would go with Russian as im sure some speak/learn Russian too

If your only staying for a month/year then yea just learn some basics of Serbian but focus on Russian

OK thanks for the advice, I'll go with the Russian for now!
I'm from serbia.. Our language is not that difficult to learn. And both languages are very similar. I can understand what the russian guys are talking. If you decide to learn russian, try to learn also serbia. The more languages you can speak the better. You will have more opportunities if you are searching for a job!
Russian>Serbian. However, if you decide to do Serbian as a side language, I can teach you for free (when I have free time).

Both Serbian and Russian Languages are similar with words.
I could suggest you learn Russian first, as there are more options in learning the language. Then, once you feel confident in speaking and reading/writing Russian, learn Serbian. Piece of Cake.

Hey man thanks I appreciate it!
What I plan to do is look into Russian intensely these first few months then get into beginner Serbian.
I feel it will be easier once I understand Russian basics!
