Raid At Call Centres Near Mumbai For Scamming US Residents

THANE: Over 500 call centre employees, including top officials, have been detained near Mumbai for allegedly threatening US citizens and siphoning off their money in one of the biggest raids in the country.

The workers would pretend to be US tax officials, call up American citizens and demand their financial and bank details. They would use the details to pull out money from their accounts.

They were arrested during raids at call centres on Tuesday night and early Wednesday. Over Rs. 1 crore was stolen daily, say the police. The callers would often use 911 and threaten people with arrest to extract information.

If anyone refused to reveal these details, they would allegedly threaten them with legal action.

"We have detained around 700-800 people. It is an international racket," said police officer Paramvir Singh.

The raid was carried out by over 200 policemen late last night and continued till the early hours today.

Those arrested operated from call centres in the Mira Road area, which is part of the Thane district.

Baffles me how people even fall for these obvious scams.
American public are stupid enough to buy it. Indians take advantage.
Not possible without peoples from both countries. Looks someone outsource this to india.
It is not only in india. Many poor countries let this call centers do their illegal job in order to hire people.
How the fuck did they manage to scam around $150k a day, by doing this.
That's impressive.
Sad people fell victim to something that seemed very sketch. Anyone can call from a spoofed number and demand bank details.
imagine doing this if you weren't a sketchy indian calling from a strange number

i was actually able to call one of my friends and convince him that i was a specialist that detected malicious monitoring software on his computer

all it took was me telling him his name and other basic information

poor old people that got tricked into giving out credentials

they didn't know any better
Kingpin is US citizen. He outsourced his business.
