I'm currently on a crappy machine running linux with no skype.

The initial request failed, i'd check the website you'er trying to request from the browser itself, and if it works there you'd have ... EDIT: I missed the error code on your print 'cause i'm without my contacts.. anyway, the error is clear, 404 NOT FOUND, your link isn't reachable, re-check.

First of all: he is not calling .GetResponse() on a response object, but rather on the HttpWebRequest object. And because he is debugging and an exception was thrown the response is null.

Put a try catch around it. The WebException instance thrown has a Response property that you can read to a string via a streamreader and you can see what the server responded with. A 404 for account checking can mean a lot of things. Depending on the checking method the 404 can mean the account is available (if you are checking by trying to view a profile page for example).

Also, I just love how your project is called TwitterCheck but your variables contain the word "xbox".
