I first found my way onto Hack Forums while reading up on some web penetration attacks. I registered an account, but wasn't very active for quite a while.
A few months later, as I saw that more and more of the content I was reading was found here, I decided that the forum was worth a go, so I became much more active and started writing tutorials and answering questions for people in the coding subforums. I was the first member to get two tutorials stickied (although at the time Omni didn't want to give me a second award). I met tonnes of friends during my time in those sections, including users such as Looka (who was moderator of the Java section for quite a while), Cosa Nostra, -Base- and more. I found that by helping answer the questions others had in the coding sections, it actually helped me a lot personally, because it made me attempt a much broader range of programming problems than I would have run into on my own projects, and it helped me develop better as a helper and tutor, as I learnt better ways to explain and teach things to others.
Whilst I was contributing to the coding sector in Hack Forums, I also contributed to the Omnicoin sub-board. For all my unofficial contributions to Omnicoin, I was offered an official position as a member of the Omnicoin development team, which I gladly accepted. This led me to meet some of the members that I respect and admire the most on HF - Abraham Lincoln, Crypto, and Doctor Blue. Notably, one of the plugins we developed, which let members add an Omnicoin address to their profile, was added to HF for a short time before the project closed down. For my work there, I was given the Great thinker award, the OMC award, and 3p1c by Omni. My work there was such a cool experience, I learnt so much about cryptocurrencies from the inside out, and I really enjoyed contributing to the forums through the developments I made.
As I became a bit more well known, I was invited into my first group, the Specialists, as the leader of its coding sector. This gave me a lot of experience with working with others, coding some cool projects, let me meet more awesome members, and continue to help others with helpdesks and tutorials. I enjoyed all my time there. Since then, I've been part of many, many groups on HF, enjoyed some more than others, and led 3 or 4 of them personally. I won the 57th Member of the Month competition in August 2015 because of all the work I did, which showed me that the community really appreciated my work. As time went on though, I found myself with less time to contribute and partake, so I left most of my groups and just stuck with my favourite, the Red Lions.
Since then, things have been pretty up and down. I have run into a couple of minor issues with Omni, because of which I have been banned, repkilled, had some awards removed (including MOTM), lost my posting rights for a month and a half, and had my signature privileges removed. But I don't blame Omni for his actions, he runs these forums how he wants and needs to keep an iron grip on members to keep things in line. Now everything is sorted out I'm excited to see what else this forum will bring. Overall, I've really enjoyed my time here and it has honestly taught me so much and given me so much experience that I wouldn't have had otherwise. I hope that everyone reading this takes something away from my story: if you work hard to contribute in a HQ way, people will notice and appreciate it. May you all enjoy your time on HF as much as I have.
Thank you.
