Note: At the time I am writing this, I have only viewed season 1, however I am aware that the show remains consistent with its characteristics through the second season

That being said, the impression that I received from Gantz was one of a missed opportunity. Whether it was a bad studio, low budget, compressing the anime into 13 eps or simply throwing us in medias res, the vibe of the show did not reach its potential.

I will start with what Gantz did well. It delivered a dark, gritty story; one that was not afraid to be gory, violent, or indecent. It has the characteristics of a psych-horror and in some few instances showed that dark side. It brought an interesting perspective on morality and the dark nature that all humans possess. While there was also little of it, in the few moments where there was any action, it was done well. The soundtracks for the anime are also decent and within the anime itself, the sound helps with the different segments of the anime.

Despite this, the anime did not reach its potential. This primarily fell into two categories. The first, and most noticeable, were the characters. Our MC, while set up to be weak/cowardly/horny/prick-like in design, does nothing to amend for this but continues to drag this archetype throughout the series. The only sense of moral stability comes from a secondary character, whom we see even further development. Gantz second underlying issue is with the way they attempt to progress the story. While we may go day-by-day with our characters, no attempt to further discover the actual purpose is made. Perhaps this is by design, but it leaves the viewer frustrated by the dragged out plot with little to create substance. I also found the animation to be cringy at times, especially where there were many instances of CGI camera rotations 2-3x or more per episode.

Nevertheless, I will admit that it was a decent watch to pass the time. However, if anyone does intend to watch this, this is not an anime to be considered done well.

I was a bit disappointed with what Madhouse done to this anime but it definitely entertaining enough to watch. Would be nice to see it redone and continued by another studio though.
Few episodes was awesome but in general it is average anime, but i would recommend it to watch atleast first 2 episodes to check out if you liked it.
The manga was amazing, 9/10.

Would love if some studio remade it.
Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria is a masterpiece 10/10

Believe the studio that made it was Gonzo, lest there's another version that was made by Madhouse or they co-studioed?

Will have to check out the manga, the anime felt rushed and just didn't convey itself well imo

Just finished the second season, very much a wtf ending. Action was better in the second season but the story became lackluster and felt very incomplete after the first story arc.

Pretty decent anime actually I watched it a couple years ago but I didn't expect anyone from HF to have seen it. But i have to agree on the fact that it felt rushed there was too many things going on in one episode. I can remember one cool scene though with the two statues.
i watched it long ago as well cant remember too much of it but all i know is that i enjoyed it so much that i went straight on to reading the manga could have been better but overall was happy with its enjoyable especially the dark aspect of the show
Gantz was quite slow for me to start watch, but it got better later on.

Some scenes was quite loving tho' ^^
