How to hack prison Mp3 player??

Hi all, my brother just got out of prison with an mp3 player that has some type of proprietary security software on it. It's an amp'd maxx pro 4. It has a bunch of songs on it, but I can't get in to take songs off or put them on. I'm running windows xp sp3 (I know I know... I have my reasons right now). When I plug it in, it detects new hardware, then can't find the drivers for it, and is unable to talk to it and doesn't allow me to see it as an external storage device. I've heard some say try plugging it into a machine with linux os.. My guess is it maybe needs some type of special drivers to communicate. In my mind it's a simple storage device when it comes down to it so I feel there should be SOME WAY of me getting in. Plus I've heard others have done it, I just can't figure it out. Any ideas??? You can go to the keefe web site to see the player as well...
Did you ever find an answer to your question?

Your first step should be upgrading to an officially supported OS. Many devices don't release drivers for XP anymore, and the ones that do haven't had updates at all in probably the last 5 years. Linux tends to be good for communicating with devices Windows can't handle, so try that if Win7 or Win10 doesn't work (I'd recommend trying Win10 just to be safe, but 7 should be fine)
Ubuntu works rather well out of the box, so it'd be a good one for this kind of task - just install Ubuntu and plug in the device. Make sure any updates are installed before saying it doesn't work, though.

If that doesn't work, it probably isn't meant to be used with a computer. If you're exceptionally practiced at soldering, you can get the NAND-Flash chip off the board, but the slightest mistake could lose the data for good. That's the kind of work for an experienced electrical engineer who's worked on disassembling PCBs in the past - probably not a service you could get on the cheap. Think $20k type expensive (I pulled that number out of my ass, but it's probably in the ballpark)
