Notorious - Basic Linux Virtual Machine Install Guide
Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.

Hey, decided to do a quick one for the HF community. I'm going to be expanding this over time, I saw that we had one for Windows one located here and wanted to expand on that since I started studying Linux and I'm trying to get a feel for different flavors.

There are so many and probably too many.
I would stick to Elementary OS if you are new to Linux or Ubuntu. Personally I'm a Debian kinda guy.

I've personally used both Virtual Box and VMware Workstation Pro.
What do I use currently? I currently use VMware Workstation Pro as I found it to be the best for me anyways.

This part is pretty straight forward, you will be greeted with a window looking like this if using VMware Workstation.

Then you will click on Typical for now, if you know what you are doing then feel free to click advanced.

Next you will need to either pop the disc in or select the .iso from a drive on your system.
For this tutorial I'm gonna use Elementary OS 64-Bit.

Next select Linux and whatever version is necessary for the distribution you picked out.

Now choose where you would like the location, I usually leave mine to default.

Choose what size drive you would like to have, this can be edited later.

Now it will create the VM after you hit finish or you can hit customize hardware to change the Memory or Processor settings + More.
Spoiler (Click to View)
If you hit finish skip this part. I wanted to boost the Memory to about 4Gb and Processor to 3 threads just to make the system a bit faster.

Just hit the power on button to start the VM System.
The system will now boot and you will basically just need to install the OS. Most Linux OS's are the same except for like Arch Linux and such which is text mode. To speed this up I will only have text next to parts that need to be explained in detail.

This part can be different depending on what you want to do storage wise and if you want full disk encryption. I left everything at default for this as I'm just showing the basics of setting-up a virtual machine.

At this point the system will install as in the screenshot below, just wait a few minutes.

Congrats now you can hit restart and hit I finished installing and the system will then reboot. It will prompt to remove the install disc just hit enter.
Now the VM is basically installed and setup.

I would recommend updating after you boot for the first time to make sure you have all the latest security fixes etc.
Navigate to Applications and open a terminal window.
Spoiler (Click to View)
Once you have this open type the below command into the window.
Code
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgradeSpoiler (Click to View)
If prompted hit Y to continue the update/upgrade.

Huge thanks to my IRL friend that got me into Linux, I'm currently studying for CompTIA Linux+. If anyone has question don't hesitate to ask, I will be expanding this soon. I know I'm not the most knowledgeable in this field but made this to help others out that don't have a dedicated system but will still like to explore/learn.
