My background;
I am in no way an expert in day trading cryptocurrencies and the stock market. I have made many mistakes and lost earnings and investments due to bad timing, impatience, aggression, lack of research and other factors that influence the market. In the grand scheme of things I am just a small time trader compared to for example, financial analysts who place orders on behalf of hedge funds and investment portfolios on an institutional level. If you make trades based on someone else’s experience or advice in the event of a loss, the responsibility can only be beared by yourself. You are responsible for your investments and should endeavour to make sure you have all the necessary research and liability limitation as possible.

In my short time of trading, I have come across so many people who are new to trading – I was once one of those people who had no idea where to start. What is important is that you don’t become one of the many tens of thousands of traders that exist who will not invest time into the learning curve and do not understand the positions they have bought or sold, who solely rely on those who are experienced and copy trades. This approach over time will result in a partial or total loss.

Setups;
Finding low risk entries requires finding low risk setups. Any good setup is an opportunity to get into a trade with as little risk as possible. For example; a setup rising $100 dollars, but has the potential to make $300 dollars is a 3:1 Profit/Loss ratio. A negative risk reward ratio would be risking $100 dollars to make $10 is a high risk setup, a profit/loss ratio of 1:0.1.

Hunting for Volume;
Our job as day traders is to hunt for volume and volatility. Volume is a key factor in causing movement or momentum in a stock or currency. In cryptocurrencies this means searching, planning and hunting for any type of catalyst that can cause movement.

Why do most traders fail;
Most traders fail because it requires them to make quick decisions and to have a very high level of discipline mentally and emotionally. For example, if we hear activist investors take a stake in amazon, initial reaction might be to buy the stock immediately, however, you need to be able to make a quick decision whether to buy or short a stock with discipline. In that moment you’d need to be able to make a decision to determine what price range, the size of your trade, risk tolerance and your strategy parameters. This requires multi-tasking under stress. You don’t want to be in a scenario where you have to sell or buy but freeze up, looking at the keyboard not knowing what to do and hesitating, causing big mistakes or entering a position which is not worth the risk ratio.

Practising self control and discipline is something which has to be built up and maintained by exercising. Disciple always has to be worked on and is always developing and being refined. Getting complacent and thinking you know everything and don’t need to look at anything around a trade is often met by a correction where you will lose money on a trade from complacency. Ultimately everything comes back to managing risk and all of the above are key components in managing your risk when trading.

How to find a setup;
Cryptocurrencies is different to the stock market in that finding trades isn’t difficult. There are a limited amount of coins compared to the thousands of companies, commodities and securities listed on the stock market. You may understand the theory of trading, but the practical application may be more difficult than initially thought. Finding your perfect A1 setups for an entry along with vital risk management (risk tolerance – stop losses related to the size of your total equity, profit to loss ratio – whether or not the trade is worth the risk). If you end up trading 30-40 times per day, it is most likely that your setups are lacking accuracy, while the commission from your exchange or broker isn’t as much as a ticket order on the stock market (between $7.5-$9.0 dollars basic), it can add up in commission fees. While your broker will love you, it is essentially you who are losing profit from taking a risk.
