Suggestions and Ideas

Hi, I recently started learning Visual Basic and have gotten to the point where I am comfortable with the language. In the way that anything that I can code on python, I could code on VB for the most part anyway as Python is my main language at the moment.

So I was looking for something to code which includes inbuilt modules and wanted to stay making console applications as I can't be bothered messing around with forums at the moment although I have made a few applications using forums before.

So any suggestions of simple applications which involve basic modules would be appreciated.

Thanks
Folder Organizer:
  • Cleanup and organizes files with similar extensions into different folders.

  • Multiple options for different organization algorithms. Ex.: (Move files with similar file extension to folder, move files with same creation date to folder and etc.)

  • More detailed info then default 'Properties' window for folders. Like a list of the different kind of file extensions found and their count instead of just total file count. Gives you an idea what kind of contents you have without going inside the sub-folders themselves.

Advanced Shutdown:
  • A timer that you can schedule to safely shut down/restart your computer.

  • Other shutdown methods: Ex.: (Shutdown when process ended, shutdown when window closed, shutdown when certain event is triggered.)

  • When timer started show info: (Time remaining, Started timer, Timer end time)

I like the idea of messing around with files etc and I like the shutdown idea but don't want to risk turning my computer off everytime I start the program lol. But I will definitely mess around with files and was also thinking about doing some web based requests and then getting the data back. So do you think I should start doing the web based stuff after this folder stuff or would it be best to do other things after?

Thanks

The shutdown method would only be called when all the necessary checks have completed. So you shouldn't be required to shutdown your computer every time while debugging. Therefore the option to cancel a timer would also be convenient. You could also:
  • Comment out the Shutdown() method call.

  • Use a virtual machine for testing.

  • Use an #IF

Code
#if RELEASE
        // Call shutdown method.
#else
        // Debugging so ignore shutdown.
#endif

Start simple but with purpose or an idea and keep building on it. Might be easier starting with some file manipulation so you understand how work with data locally. Really depends what software you would like to develop.

The windows task scheduler, try looking into that. It might be of use scheduling tasks that could run your application with specific arguments. Ex.: MessageBox: Warning computer shutdown in 5min!

What is it that you would like to make?

Is for way in the future but it will be scraping images of a certain site, possibly using an api not sure if they have one and then archiving the images and data in my folders as well as having the application look nice and preview the pictures etc. Was also think of a song converter that uses youtube

If you decide to release them as open-source put them on GitHub. Good place to learn with others. [Image: thumbsup.gif]
