I was curious if anyone had steps I could follow to create a bootable usb drive. I'm needing one for OS Windows 2012 R2.

This. Use rufus v3.3. It's best when you wanna create an Bootable Pen Drive especially for Windows 8/8.1

I agree. Rufus is easy to use, you only need the image file of the OS.

I would recommend you to use rufus, from https://rufus.ie/ , You can download Iso's from that application too!

Microsoft media creation tool offer to make an bootable USB, must be the easiest way to do it :)
I personally use rufus for my linux installs.
