If you go for online backup solution, make sure you choose a reputable site. mega.nz is not one of them. Disadvantages include but not limited to speed, monthly fee, presence of Internet.
Offline solution have better speed, information control but require higher initial investment.
Make sure your backups are encrypted, and encrypted well. Since in the cloud, you don't own anything in the cloud. I personally would go with the external hard drive if I could only choose one out of the two. Since atleast with the external hard drive you can encrypt it and have physical access to the device. In the cloud, the most you can do is encrypt the files you need backup.
