What's wrong with Visual "Basic" Studio? It's really fucking great.

I mean, I think it's amazing, it has everything you'd need and more, but I do hate how sluggish it is, if I am not creating a GUI application Rider or MonoDevelop would defiantly be my first choice, I love the GUI designer, a big reason I keep using it.

Try any of these if you really can't stand VS: MonoDevelop

Before throwing out Visual Studio consider downgrading to an older version. I use Visual Studio 2013 and it hasnt caused me any problems.

Why would anyone downgrade? Visual Studio Enterprise 2017 (free for students) is amazing.

Downgrading is a very silly idea. I don't know what Visual Basic Studio is, but Visual Studio is a great IDE. If you don't want that then switch over to JetBrains Rider, or Visual Studio Code. Why anyone would choose MonoDevelop in this day and age is beyond me too.

I think the problems you are having with VS is related to PEBKAC...

MonoDevelop is a horrible alternative, you're better off writing stuff in Notepad++ and compiling using commandline mono (mcs) or .net csc (that's what I do when I write quick stuff)

Your far better of just writing byte by byte really, it gives you a feeling of connection to your software and if learnt well can prove to be extremely useful.
