if someone's consciousness is uploaded to a machine, do they die?

If a human's consciousness is uploaded to a machine before they die, which is them, the body or the consciousness? If its the consciousness then do they die when the body dies?

What if an old man switches bodies with a 6th grade boy before the old man dies? Is the person alive the sixth grade boy or the old man?

You know what I'm sayin?
Uh, I think the consciousness is them, because the body is just let's say a box, holding stuff. Weird question tho lol
Their body would be technically be dead, but their mind would still be alive, provided this machine is able to keep their consciousness alive.

it depends on whether the consciousness is a copy of the data in the brain, or simply being moved from one location to the other
I would say no. Death for me is when you are brain dead. The body is the a method carry out the actions of your conscious. You could replace every organ and bones and still be the same person.

Aah. See, you get the question. That's my question. Is the consciousness explicitly the data in the brain or is it the location of the data? Is the sixth grade brain therefore the sixth grader or is the old man's data the old man?
Yes you would die.

Imagine they upload it onto 2 machines at the same time. Would you live twice? Hell no there would just be 2 copies of you or some shit idk who the fuckkk cares
I'm not convinced that consciousness is an entity. In my view, conscious is a state of the body and who you are is just data
I think you don't understand the question yourself.

How can you die when you are not your body. A body is only an accumulation which your have gathered from the mass of this earth. If consciousness gets uploaded on a machine then you can be immortal. This is what transhumanism is working towards.

If you explore the hindu texts you will get the answer.

But that all assumes that the consciousness of the person is the actual consciousness and is therefore the real person and not a copy.

So then how do we know for sure that it is and how are we going to achieve transhumanism as a society?

This thread probably belongs in the Science, Religion, Philosophy, and Politics Section

Consciousness is about awareness and the body is a machine.
You are your memories and experiences; ripples of electrochemical signals in the brain. In other words, you are data.
If the mind was moved, you wouldn't be dead. Not unless there was no future possibility of you being self-aware.

I don't see the point in answering the old man question- you used the word 'switches'. If they switched, obviously the 'old man is alive'.
It is more or less making a copy of the person's consciousness hence its not the original so technically the person would be dead imo anyway.

That is a question that only philosophers try to answer currently.
Science is working on it though.

Obviously the hopes in a transhumanist future is that your consciousness when moved is still YOU, not a copy.

I feel ya dog. I hope scientists answer this question soon.
Did you get this from that one game?
was a great game if you're basing it off of it.
