Alternative to a DIV Overlay?

Hey guys, I have a friend who is using a DIV transparent overlay with a modal popup that is to prevent people from using his software past a trial period. Although maybe less than 15% of these customers are smart enough to inspect element and delete the overlay. Is there an alternative to a DIV overlay which won't allow this?
Best way is to actually prevent the content from showing unless the subscription is active.

Show an image or something.
Validate the trial before sending the content.
Server-side. Anything done client-side is editable by the user. Need I repeat what's said above, don't send any data unless the trial is active.

Is it taking user accounts/info into account? If so use this to create an expiry date + 14 days time or whatever from when they signed up. Nach is correct saying this should be dealt only with server-side.
Then a simple if statement on the page:

if(date is below specific users expiry date)
show trial div
else
show need to purchase/trial ran out div

Lots of CMS these days make this easier. You can set up a members only area to access the software and have it expire when trial ends also prompting them to renew with an invoicing system.
Validate the trial before sending the conten
Validate server side as a few others said above.
